The Charge lost to Washington 2-1 at home, but it still felt like a home team win. With the Sixers playing game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, who would think that the Charge would have a sellout of 11,800 tickets? Yes, they did. Most of the fans came to see the number one draw in Womens' Soccer, Mia Hamm, playing for the Washington Freedom.

Cumberland Ends Edgewoods Run At Group 3 Championship

The seventh seeded Edgewood Eagles entered the South Jersey Group 3 softball playoffs with an uphill battle. Knowing they needed to win two tough games, the Lady Eagles would climb that hill and reach the finals against the number one seeded Cumberland Colts. Both teams traveled to Eastern High School in search of the Group 3 championship, but Cumberland scored three runs in the bottom to the third inning to pull away and defeat Edgewood 6-3. The Lady Colts now will advance to the state semifinals against Middletown South on Tuesday at Middlesex County College.

As usual, when teams enter the playoffs, every aspect of play gets turned up a notch. Rivalries get even more intense. Even though Shawnee defeated Eastern 10-3 in their regular season meeting on April 30th, both teams knew this would be a different game.

The Charge square off with Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom twice this week in a home-and-home series. Thursday's match in Washington will air locally on CN8 TV at 7:05 p.m., while Sunday's home match will be televised by Comcast SportsNet at 7:05 p.m. Joining Hamm on the talented Freedom roster are U.S. National Team goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, Brazilian stars Pretinha and Roseli, and midfielder Anne Makinen from Finland. Pretinha shares the league lead in goals (4) and points (9). The Charge and Freedom meet for the third and final time on Thursday, July 26 at 7:05 p.m. in Washington.
