Phantoms Blank River Rats 3-0

Neil Little stopped all 27 shots he faced and Jon Sim scored a pair of third-period goals as the Philadelphia Phantoms posted a 3-0 victory over the Albany River Rats tonight in front of a crowd of 8,561 at the Wachovia Spectrum. Dennis Seidenberg and Ryan Ready each added two points for the Phantoms, who snapped a four-game home losing streak. Philadelphia is now 3-0 vs. Albany this season and unbeaten in its last seven meetings (6-0-1) with the River Rats at home.

The Philadelphia KiXX (11-6) defeated the Cleveland Force (5-7) by a score of 6-5 in overtime at the Convocation Center at CSU this afternoon. KiXX defender Pat Morris registered the game-winning goal a mere 26 seconds into the game’s extra session. Peter Pappas improved to 9-5 between the posts for Philadelphia, turning away 17 of the 22 shots he faced, while Jim Larkin (X-X) took the loss for the Force with 21 saves on 27 chances.

The Hermits continues to demonstrate how to play good basketball at the start of this season and it shows with their winning record and rankings. With a very good offensive attack and solid defense, the Hermits have gotten a lot of high school basketball fans’ attention with their 7-0 start. Their latest victory was against Bridgeton who had watched the Hermits break this game open in the second quarter. Anthony Farmer led St. Augustine with 22 points and the Hermits rolled on for the 77-57 victory.

Deptford Survives Township's Late Assault

The Spartans boy's basketball team started their non-league game against Washington Township in full control maintaining their lead for the majority of the game. Instead of a game that Deptford could have opened and maintain a double-digit lead, Township found a way to cut into their deficit to make it a very competitive and exciting ending. Deptford's Aigner Green converted six straight free throws down the stretch to hold off the Minutemen. Despite posting twenty-two scored in the final quarter, Deptford controlled the boards long enough to hold onto a five point advantage during the final eight minutes. The Spartans picked up their second victory in a row to increase their record to 7-1 with their 48-42 win.

The Philadelphia KiXX (10-6) defeated the Kansas City Comets (5-6) in front of 5,877 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum tonight. KiXX midfielder Ze Roberto recorded the game winner with an unassisted goal at 13:13 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (8-5) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away four of the seven shots (season-low) he faced, while Sanaldo (1-2) took the loss for the Comets with 13 saves on 16 chances.

Sharp's Shootout Goals Give Phantoms 4-3 Win

Patrick Sharp scored two shootout goals and Neil Little stopped Michel Ouellet on the final attempt by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the Phantoms defeated the Penguins at Wachovia Arena, 4-3. With Philadelphia leading 3-2 heading into the third period, Kris Beech scored a breakaway goal just 21 seconds into the frame. There was no more scoring from either team from that point on, until the game had to be decided in a shootout. Ben Stafford and Joni Pitkanen also scored in the shootout, as Philadelphia increased its lead over the rival Penguins to seven points in the East Division.

Riggs Scores at Will as Clearview Beats Timber Creek

Chris Riggs scored seven goals as Clearview defeated Timber Creek 11-3 at Hollydell on Friday night. In just his second game back, Riggs looked like his old self, dominant on almost every shift and creating scoring chances for himself and his teammates. Timber Creek actually led 1-0 as Danny Cavallaro scored in the firs three minutes of the game. Clearview took over form there as Sean Stamm set-up Riggs twice over the next five minutes, once on the power play, to put Clearview ahead 2-1. Goals by Matt Klancer, short-handed, and Steve Short, on the power play put Clearview ahead 4-1 and in control heading into the second period.

Osterdahl Nets Five in Upset of Eastern

Justin Osterdahl scored five goals, including the game winner with twenty-three seconds left in the game as Williamstown upset Eastern 6-5 in high school ice hockey action played at Hollydell. Williamstown led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Eric Finn on the power play and one by Osterdahl on a breakaway. Eastern fought back to tie the game at 2-2 as Andrew Kaiser scored two goals less than a minute apart early in the second period.

Phantoms Drop 2-1 Decision to Syracuse

Jamie Pushor's first goal of the year midway through the third period was the difference tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms, 2-1. Mark Hartigan also scored and Karl Goehring made 22 saves for Syracuse, which completed a two-game season sweep of the Phantoms. The Crunch, who had dropped four of their last five games entering tonight, also posted a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia on Nov. 28 that snapped the Phantoms' AHL-record 17-game winning streak. Jon Sim scored the lone goal and Antero Niittymaki finished with 29 saves as Philadelphia lost its fourth straight home game. The Phantoms are now winless in their last six meetings with Syracuse since their last win in the series in February 2003.

Strong Shooting Propels Devils to Win over Chargers

The USP men's basketball team connected on 13 of 20 shots from the field in the second half as they overcame a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Dominican College 72-62 tonight. USP finished the game shooting a sizzling 61.0% (25-41) from the field while the Chargers hit just 50% of their shots (26-52). The Devils held the advantage on the free throw line, making 15 of 22 (68.2% compared to just 7 of 12(58.3%) for Dominican.

Defense Helps Devils Defeat Dominican

The USP women's basketball team turned in an impressive defensive effort to start off the second half as they handed Dominican College their ninth loss overall and third loss in the CACC 68-49. Leading by 10 at the half 34-24, the Devils forced seven straight turnovers in the first 2:39 of the final period scoring six straight points to lead 40-24 before the Chargers got a shot off in the period. The Devils continued the defensive pressure, allowing only one basket while going on a 13-2 run over the next 5:10 to lead 53-26 with 12:11 left.

Philadelphia KiXX Executive Vice President/General Manager Greg Bibb announced today the acquisition of six players through the 2005 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Dispersal Draft. On December 30, the MISL announced the San Diego Sockers and the Monterrey Tigres were discounting operations for the balance of the 2004-05 season. Through the draft, Philadelphia acquired the rights to Philadelphia native Daniel Antoniuk, all-star forward Steve Butcher, Herculez Gomez, Ricardo Villar, Alan Gordon and McKinley Tennyson, all of which were on the San Diego Sockers’ protected list.

The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today the revised the 2004-05 season schedule as a result of the San Diego Sockers and the Monterrey Tigres discontinuing operations for the balance of the season. The League announced that decision on Thursday, December 30. Under the new schedule, all remaining Philadelphia KiXX home dates will be played as scheduled with one exception; the Milwaukee Wave will replace the Monterrey Tigres as the team’s opponent on Wednesday, February 16.

Junior forward Josh Kennedy collected his first career double-double at Rutgers-Camden with game-high totals of 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-69 loss at La Roche College Dec. 30. Kennedy went 13-for-17 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the foul line on the way to career highs in both categories. He also tied his career high of two blocks, while adding one steal.

MISL Announces Dispersal Draft Details

The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today details for the special dispersal draft to allocate players on the rosters of the former San Diego Sockers and the MISL Monterrey teams. The League will hold the dispersal draft on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. (EST) via teleconference. Teams will select players according to their combined winning percentage from the 2003-04 season and the first part of the 2004-05 season, including games played through January 2, 2005.
