Ice Hockey Spotlight: Sunday, April 10, 2005 By Al Cohen Dennis Seidenberg scored 41 seconds into overtime to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 3-2 victory over the Albany River Rats tonight at the Wachovia Spectrum. Philadelphia went on its third and final power play with 49 seconds to go in regulation when Albany's David Hale was sent off for roughing. With a 4-on-3 advantage in overtime, Philadelphia calmly worked the puck around between Jon Sim, John Slaney and Seidenberg, who one-timed a rocket past River Rats goaltender Scott Clemmensen. The goal was Seidenberg's 13th of the year and his sixth game-winner, which leads all AHL defensemen. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, April 9, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Chris Rollins had most of his pitches working for him when he took the mound against Atlantic City Saturday morning at Winslow Township. With a lively fast ball mixed in with an occasional curve ball, Rollins was able to strikeout 16 batters over seven innings. But pitching alone will not win games and that was true facing the Vikings in a non-league game. Atlantic City did have their chances to score but the defense for Township came up big and that defense would include Rollins on the mound. A single run in the first and fifth innings was enough Winslow Township to outlast their opponent by one, 2-1. |

Chris Campoli and Jason Guerriero also scored as Bridgeport won for the third time in its last five games. High School Softball: Thursday, April 7, 2005 By Susan Hall New Egypt and Florence were very familiar with each other’s softball program as they could be found at the top of the Burlington County Freedom division. Both teams advanced to the group title game last year with the Lady Warriors from New Egypt winning the championship. At the start of another run at the title, Florence did not let a quick start by the Warriors bother them as they battled back from a three run deficit. But a classic battle between Florence’s Melissa Mehrer and Shannon Houston proved to be the difference for New Egypt. A single up the middle by Houston brought home the winning run to claim the 5-4 extra inning victory. |
High School Baseball: Thursday, April 7, 2005 By Jason Brown Talking about seeing the baseball, the Crusaders from Bishop Eustace used the most of their hits to its fullest during the Robert Shaw Baseball Tournament. Bishop Eustace received back to back home runs from Bill Rowell and Rob Traister while Jay Gallen also slammed home a shot during the third inning to highlight the 10 run second inning. When the game was completed, five players from the Crusaders took advantage of the wind blowing out in left field to easily roll past Audubon 18-4. Jason Miller was the winning pitcher for Bishop Eustace. |

High School Softball: Wednesday, April 6, 2005 By Susan Hall Each season there's always high hopes on improving your softball program to do better than the previous years whether or not a state championship was captured. For Haddon Heights, starting out the season on the winning side of the scoreboard is familiar. It's maintaining that winning attitude is a bit harder to do especially in the Colonial Conference. After defeating Haddonfield and Lindenwold, the Lady Garnets were facing their third opponent from their conference in Haddon Township. Starting pitcher Kathy Transue picked up the victory for Haddon Heights when the offense’s five run third inning was more than enough to post the 7-1 victory. |

High School Lacrosse: Monday, April 4, 2005 By Clark Washington It is so easy to continue the discussion about this year's boy lacrosse season and how it will be a learning experience for many of the teams. That learning curb is even steeper for the addition of so many new players participating in the sport and how it will take some time for those individuals to polish up their skills. West Deptford was one of the new teams added this season and were participating in their second game of the season when they traveled to Washington Township. The Minutemen were looking to start their season off with a win and they would do brake open a close game during the second half. Wayne Sartorio netted 5 goals for Washington Township as they went on to defeat their opponent 10-2. |
High School Baseball: Monday, April 4, 2005 By Jason Brown It's always nice to know that when it counts, all nine players on the field can depend on one another to come away with the win. Each game a different person or persons come up big with that key hit to propels the past their opponent. At the start of a game played at West Deptford, Audubon and the host Eagles were both successful scoring runs early. With Audubon holding onto a one run lead, Jake Brownell’s three run home run during the bottom of the fifth inning highlighted a six run inning to take the lead for good. West Deptford picked up the 15-7 victory in a Colonial Conference competition. |
High School Baseball: Monday, April 4, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The Olympic Conference battle between Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West was a classic example of using your last at bats when it counts. Six lead changes, four doubles, one triple and a homerun had all of the makings of a dramatic win. With Camden Catholic regaining the lead by one run during their top half of the seventh inning, the Lions used their last at bat to the fullest. West not only tied the game, they also were able to pull out the victory when Frank Schmidt’s single drove home the winning run. Cherry Hill West won their first game of the early season by a 5-4 margin. |
