Washington Township Takes Over During Second Half Friday, May 27, 2005 By Stephanie Wright Just as the seeding predicted, the top four teams in the South A girl’s lacrosse bracket were on pace to advance to the semifinals. Moorestown, Shawnee and Eastern had won their quarterfinals match-up and it was left to the Minutemaids to not only defeat the twelfth seeded Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East, but also to overcome a halftime deficit. The fourth seeded Minutemaids found themselves trailing at the break by a goal but turned up the defense and especially the offense during the second half. Washington Township held their opponent scoreless the rest of the way allowing the offense to take center stage and score nine times. Kelly Angstadt and Katie Lofton led the scoring success by scoring four goals each and Washington Township advanced with their 14-6 victory. |

Painter Supplies Only Run to Advance Highland Friday, May 27, 2005 By Jason Brown It was a pitcher’s duel taking place at Highland High School between the seventh seeded Chargers from Timber Creek and the Tartans who were the second seed in the South Jersey Group 3 tournament. Ryan Buchter and Andrew Storms were the starting pitchers who were responsible for keeping the runners off the bases. Storms would record ten strikeouts on the mound for Timber Creek, but the one hit he gave up would decide this quarterfinals game. Paul Painter would provide what seemed to be a harmless solo home run early in the game that turned out to being the biggest hit of the game. That run would be more than enough support for Buchter to work with as Highland would advance to the next round of the playoffs. |

Camden Catholic Wins Shoot Out at Collingswood Thursday, May 26, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty It was a game that could not be decided in regulation. Two teams with similar goals showed why this South Jersey Group B quarterfinals girl’s lacrosse game had no one running for cover during a rainy overtime game. The fifth seeded Fighting Irish from Camden Catholic and fourth seeded Panthers from Collingswood would battle to an 18-18 deadlock at the end of regulation. Two early goals by Collingswood during the extra period were quickly erased by Katie Gallagher. Not satisfied with those goals, Gallagher worked her way past the defense and scored the game winner in sudden death to defeat Collingswood by the narrowest of margins. With the 22-21 victory, the Fighting Irish will travel to play top seeded Holy Cross. |

Moorestown Easily Advance to Second Round Tuesday, May 24, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The first round of the girl’s lacrosse South A bracket had began and should end with Moorestown yet again the favorite to win the tournament. The five time defending champions have every right to be labeled the favorite with every player on the squad having the experience of a winning program. The top seeded Lady Quakers were hosting the sixteen seeded Toms River South and found out first hand how deadly this lacrosse team could be. After missing net on their first five shot attempts of the game, Gulia Giordano started the scoring success with the first two goals of the game. She had started a string of twelve goals in a row for the Quakers. When the final horn was sounded, Moorestown would be rewarded with a 20-2 victory and continue to host another game at home. |

Ocean City Barons Versus Cape Cod Crusaders: Match Preview Monday, May 23, 2005 By Paul O'Donnell As of right now, Cape Cod has not played their match with Albany scheduled for May 21. The match has been postponed and as yet no announcement on arrangements to play the match has been made. Since Cape Cod has played only one match so far (a 1-0 win) a victory over Albany would see them tied with the Barons at the top of the division with six points setting the stage for the key match next Sunday (May 29) in Ocean City. A victory by Albany would also put them in a tie at the top with the Barons and could eliminate the Crusaders from Open Cup consideration. |
