College Ice Hockey:
Rowan Falls to Scranton 5-2

The Rowan ice hockey team lost to division leading Scranton 5-2 at Hollydell on Saturday night. Mike Pisko led Scranton with two goals, Fred Brewer and Mike Keating scored for Rowan. Playing in the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference, this young team from Rowan are struggling with a 2-7-2-1 record has a roster of only 7 seniors and should only get better. Under the direction of Coach John Caulfield along with Assistant Coach Mike Husek, solid defense and back-checking are two key areas they seem to stress. Almost half the roster consists of players from the South Jersey Ice Hockey League that also includes former South Jersey Sports Online Tier 1 player of the year Fred Brewer leading the team in scoring with 10 goals as well as the league.

Haddonfield Stops the Top Seed in Finals

The top two seeds had advanced to the finals of the South Jersey Group II girls' soccer tournament and both teams had their reasons why they should win. The Green Wave from Audubon was the number one seed hosting this game against a very determined Haddonfield soccer team. The second seeded Bulldogs made themselves right at home matching Audubon's intensity on every possession. Haddonfield would score the first goal of this game and that goal by Natalie Dickson proved to be the game winner. The Bulldogs' defense would shut out Audubon as they moved into the state semi-finals with their 4-0 win. Goalie Frances Nicoletti preserved the shutout for Haddonfield.

Clearview edges Timber Creek, Captures first Victory

Fresh off its spirited tie with Township, Clearview captured its first victory of the season defeating Timber Creek 3-2 at Hollydell on Friday night. Timber Creek scored the only goal of the first period just one minute into the game as Seth Pohle jumped on a loose puck and blasted home a shot. Clearview tied the game at 1-1 midway thru the second period as Joe Tropiano deposited a Shaun Stamm pass into the net. Later in the period, Stamm put Clearview ahead at 2-1 as he won a face-off and chipped the puck over the glove of goalie Chris Costa.

Six Goal Third Sparks Township Over Eastern

Washington Township scored six goals in the third period to break open a close game and they went on to defeat Eastern 8-0 in front of a sparse crowd at Hollydell. With both teams missing key players, each team called up players from their JV teams to fill out the roster, and Township got an earl contribution from one of the players. After Christian Biscardi scored at the six minute mark to give Township a 1-0 lead, Jared Emmet scored his first goal as a Minuteman on a pass from Christian Fleagle to make it 2-0.

Eastern Captures the SJ Group IV Title

Getting that first goal of the game during the group finals always gives that team the edge not only on the scoreboard but also for a team's confidence. Competing for the South Jersey Group IV girls' soccer champion, the Lady Vikings from Eastern had all of the confidence that they could defeat the Minutemaids from Washington Township for the first time this season. Eastern would score the first goal of the game early in the first half but knew that it would take solid defense to maintain their lead. The Vikings would score again during the first half and the defense would preserve their 2-0 lead through the second half. With the win, Eastern were able to successfully pick up their second sectional title in a row.

Second Half Rally Pushes Crusaders into the Finals

These two teams were very familiar with one another as they had met in last year's playoffs. The Bulldogs from Glassboro were looking to repeat their performance by knocking off the Lady Crusaders out of the post season tournament for the second year in a row. This evenly played first half of field hockey had to be decided during that all-important second half. The host Bishop Eustace would rally behind Leah Furey's goal midway through the half proved to be the game winner. The Crusaders, with their 3-1 victory over Glassboro, will advance to the state finals.

Haddonfield Still Unbeaten and Moves into the Finals

During the state finals, every team participating in their quest to reach the title game has the talent to claim the state trophy for their school. Haddonfield, with a loss so far with a record of 19-0-2, is another team with players that can completely take over a game. Against Rumson Fair Haven, the Bulldogs found themselves back on their heals during the early moments of this Group II semi-finals game played at Bishop Eustace. Haddonfield would regroup and post a three goal lead during the second half and found themselves defending their chance to advance to the finals. The defense, led by goalie Christina Puggi, would survive a late rally by Rumson and advance to the finals with their 3-2 victory.

Ito's 28-yard Field Goal Seals Win

No. 15 Rutgers registered its biggest win in school history and kept its unbeaten streak alive, stunning No. 3 Louisville, 28-25 before a record crowd of 44,111 at Rutgers Stadium. The prime-time victory in front of a nationally-televised audience was the first over a ranked opponent by the Scarlet Knights since 1988. Rutgers is just one of four undefeated teams remaining in college football- No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Michigan and No. 14 Boise State are the others. On his second attempt, junior placekicker Jeremy Ito (Loma Linda, Calif.) kicked a 28-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining in the game to push the Scarlet Knights to their ninth victory of the season. The nine wins are the most for a Rutgers team since the 1978 campaign.

Bishop Eustace Moves One Step Closer

The Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace knew they were expected to make it to the finals of the girls' Non-Public South B soccer finals. During the regular season, they played very well and were rewarded the top seed in this year's tournament. Not looking past their game against the fifth seeded St. Rose squad, the Crusaders were focused on this game and it showed on the field. Bishop Eustace's defense only allowed two shots on goal and the offense scored in both halves of this game. The Crusaders would advance to the finals with their 4-0 victory.

Pezzato and Gray key Shawnee Victory

Joe Pezzato had a goal and three assists and Paul Gray allowed only one goal as Shawnee defeated Williamstown 4-1 on Monday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Ryan Welsey added two goals for Shawnee while Justin Osterdahl scored the lone Williamstown goal. Pezzato was all over the ice and created numerous scoring opportunities for his team. Welsey put Shawnee up 1-0 as he benefited from a great pass from Pezzato on a 2-on-1 break, as Pezzato drew the defenseman over and slid the puck to Welsey and he banged home the puck midway through the first period. Shawnee had three consecutive power plays and failed to convert, but they did convert when Williamstown had the man advantage.

Raptor of the Week: Travis Stewart

Sophomore Travis Stewart completed a Raptor of the Week hat trick, notching his third honor of the fall season after a spectacular performance at the ECAC Cross Country Championships Nov. 4. Stewart finished 12th out of 281 runners with his second-fastest clocking of the fall, running the 8K race in 26:50. It is the ninth-fastest time in program history. Stewart also earned Raptor of the Week on Oct. 16 and shared the honor with teammate Jonathan Salamon on Oct. 28.
