Following are questions asked by our readers concerning the rules of football, as well as other aspects of the sport. If you have a question for Coach Derryk Sellers, click here to Ask the Football Coach!

Question:

Coach...have a dumb question, but first...when I was a lad in high school, in Willingboro (Burlington County), New Jersey, in the early 70's, when we used to play our home football games in white-colored jerseys - so many schools did, and wore our dark ones for away games. When I saw a game there last fall, I noticed the home teams now wear the dark colors - like college and the pros do. When did all this change and why?   (Thomas from Dalzell, SC)

Answer:

I would like to thank you for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The home team has been wearing dark jerseys since I have been coaching, since 1990. I would like to say that the NJSIAA or the head of all athletics in NJ sends out information each year as to which team will wear what jersey for a home game. Now for the administrative side. If both schools agree, then there can be a switch in who wears the home jersey. Hope all is well in SC and SJ is still the same. Well, except for all the construction going on. Hope I answered your question. Thanks and Good Luck to you.

Question:

Dear coach, what is the darkest tint for a visor? I asked my coach and he said he wasn't sure so I figured I would ask you. The only reason why I am asking is cuz I have seen people with a slightly tinted visor before.   (Avari from Newark, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The only visor you can wear is a clear one. I have had this debate with some other players in the past. The only visor you can wear is a clear one. The reason for this is if something were to happen to you then the officials need to see your eyes. Good luck this season.

Question:

My son is 14 years old and we have been looking for a team in our area and we can't find one. Can you please help us that his dream is to play football. He is 5'9". He's on vacation he is coming back on August. Please help to find a team.   (Noemi from Brooklyn, NY)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Upon searching the web, I found an organization that is in your area and here is a link to some information about them.
Brooklyn Panthers Youth Football
I also found another team.
Brooklyn Skyhawks Football Club
Please let me know how you make out.

Question:

Hi coach, I am 13, I am gonna be in the 8th grade, I am 5'9" 130. I run the 40 in about 4.9, I bench about 140. I am a receiver, and have played there for about 5 years. I was wondering how I can improve my speed and quickness? Thanks for your time.   (Alex from Walworth, WI)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. In order to run faster, you have to run faster. Ask your coach for drills that will help you run faster and improve your quickness. Try to run routes every day and catch balls also. Good luck.

Question:

Hey, I play football for Gloucester High School in Mass. and I want to get bigger and faster in 2 months because our camp starts soon and we have one of the hardest camps in the world and I want to make varsity my sophmore year. I'm a freshman now. I weigh 145 and I'm 5'9" and I run the fourty yard dash in 4-8. Thanks.   (Dave from Gloucester, MA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I will suggest that you go to the weight room every day it is open. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Question:

I played my last year in high school and did very well, I was wondering if there were any division 3 colleges in or around New York that would be a maybe for walk ons. Thanks a lot.   (Matt from Nowhere)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. What you need to do is to get in touch with all the schools of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The site is www.njac.net. Go there and get some startup information, and then get in touch with each school and talk to the coaches. Good luck.

Question:

Dear Coach, my son has severe asthma and would like to go out for football again this year. I would like to know what kind of diet should he be on? He has a touch of high blood pressure. He takes two inhalers and one singular tablet and I have to admit I am a little worried but I will not hold him back if this is something he wants to do. He weighs about 210 and wears in between a 13 in a half to 14 size shoe. Thank you.   (Brena from Des Moines, IA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question and support of Ask the Football Coach. I would suggest that you take your son to a dietian and have the dietian come up with some kind of diet that would help your son with his asthma. I also suggest that he begin doing some type of excercising RIGHT NOW! Don't have him wait until August and try to go out there and try to play. That should get you on your way. Let me know how you make out. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

Dear coach, I am in eighth grade and I've never really played football before. This year I would like to prepare for entering as a wide receiver on my freshman team. I run almost everyday. Can you give me some tips?   (Brendan from Newton)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Please go to your coach and ask him for some drills to help you with playing receiver. One thing that you can do is to have someone throw some passes to you. Remember to work hard every day to obtain your goals. Good luck.

Question:

Coach, You might want to share this article with the kids ("Ephedra will be hot topic at next PIAA meeting"). I wrote it to get the PIAA to take action on this drug. New Jersey should do the same. Regards.   (Mark from Lehighton, PA)

Answer:

Thanks for that article. I will forward it to the NJSIAA and try to get the substance banned in NJ as well. Thanks for your support.

Question:

Hi, I am a 6ft 230 pound linebacker that runs a 4.86 in the forty yard dash. Well my question is how can I get faster in a month and a half? I have the strenght but I lack the speed. My coaches said if I get a little faster I have a good chance of going somewhere. What do I have to do to get my speed down to about a 4.7 or 4.6? Thanks for your time.   (Andrew from Newberry, SC)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I will revert back to something that I always say. In order to run faster, you need to run fast. Try running some sprints as well as distance. For example, run 2-3 miles on one day and then run half a mile and then run 12 sprints ranging from 40-60yds. Good luck with your season.

Question:

I just wanted to know, how does weight lifting help in football?   (Kevin from California)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Lifting weights can help you in many ways, here are a few:

  1. Total body strength
  2. Better body control
  3. Mental Confidence
Lifting weights can give you the mental edge that you will need to play football. You also need to do some type of running to go with the weightlifting to help your overall body development. Good luck.

Question:

I am 5'9" and I weigh 175 pounds. I play running back. For some reason the last year I had nagging injuries. I also run track and I came up with another injury, it was a quadrecept strain that held me back for a couple of weeks. Do you know how I can help prevent injuries from occuring? Also do you know how I can gain weight and improve my speed such as parachutes? Thanks for your time.   (Allen from San Diego, CA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Continue to lift weights and train to prevent these injuries. I had a coach once tell me that in order to run faster, you have to run fast. Working out with parachutes is good but work on doing some types of sprints to help your speed. Good luck.

Question:

Hey coach. I am a junior going into my senior year. I am a 5'10", 185 lb running back. I run a 4.6 40 with a 2.7 gpa and scored an 1100 on my sat. I missed last season for personal reasons, so I didn't have an oppurtunity to draw attention from college scouts. I was wondering what kind of numbers I would have to put up this upcoming season to be considered a division 1 prospect. I was thinking that I would have to at least run 1200 yds, and have a great highlite tape. Will that be enough?   (E'Lee from Egg Harbor Twp., NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Just work real hard and make some plays next season. Take those highlights and put them on a tape and send it to some schools to try to get yourself noticed. Good Luck.

Question:

I am a 6'1" 225 strong side linebacker. I run a 4.9 fourty. Can you tell me how to get fast in time for next season? Thanks.   (Steve from Grape Creek)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Remember that in order to run, you must run fast. Run sprints at least twice a week and stay in the weight room. Good luck.

Question:

I'm a sophomore linebacker 6'2" 230 pounds and I run a 4.7 forty. I was wondering how I could improve my speed for next year. I already run track and I run in Strength Shoes about 3 times a week.   (Josh from Shady Spring, WV)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You seem to be doing all the right things in order to improve your speed. There is mo magic formula to increase speed. It will take a lot of hard work and dedication on your part. Remember that in order to run faster, you must run faster. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

I am a freshman in high school and I didn't play this year, but I do plan to play next year. I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs, I lift only 140 but I do it every day. I've never played organized football and I would like to know what position I should go out for? I would prefer to be on the defensive side of the ball. Thank you for your time.   (Jason from Egg Harbor, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I know the coaches at your school and I know that if you ask them to help you find a position, they will be more than willing to help you out. Don't get discouraged, hang in there and most importantly have fun. Thanks for your question and good luck to you.

Question:

Hey coach, I'm 14 years old, I'm 5'10" 190 pounds and I run a 4.9 40. A lot of the kids on varsity told me I can start next year but I'm worried I won't be fast enough. What are some workouts I can do to improove my 40 time? My dad might get me a squat rack, would that help? Thanks for reading this coach.   (James from Minnetonka, MN)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. It would help you to get on the track team. Even if you don't win all the races, the training would greatly benefit you. If you can't get on the team, ask the coach if you could work out with them. It would help you a lot. Remember to run fast you have to run fast. Thanks and good luck. Let me know how you make out.

Question:

What do I have to do to be a head football coach for a high school, because that is my dream, I want to follow it?   (Ezekiel from Atlanta, GA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. In order to become a high school coach, you must check with your state to see the requirements. In New Jersey, you must have at least 60 college credits. Most high school coaches are teachers, therefore you must obtain a teacher's certificate which means you must get a degree from a college. Work real hard and strive to be the best. Good luck in your quest. Remember anything worth having is worth working for. Good luck!

Question:

If someone runs a 4.1 on sand at the beach, how fast in your view can he go on solid ground? Isn't this regardless fast or not on sand? Thank u 4 your time.   (Ceeza from Los Angeles, CA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. If you know the person who runs a 4.1 on sand please tell him to give me a call. He could use a manager. Thanks again for your question.

Question:

Dear coach, I have a question for you. What will you do to throw a football far? Like what things should do? Please tell me because I have in trouble throwing it far.   (Michael from Woodhaven, CT)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Please don't just concentrate on throwing the ball far. Work on your accuracy also. Get one of your friends and just work on throwing the ball to him. Try to go to a QB camp that will help also. Good luck.

Question:

I am a junior from Paso Robles, California and I would like to know if you have any wide reciever drills for me? I bench 260 and squat 380. I have the strength for my position and have pretty good hands, I just need to know some more drills to improve my quickness on coming back to the back and get down to about a 4.5 40. I currently run a 4.69 and I realy would like to know how to get that down as well as gain better agility. Thank you for your time.   (Alan from Paso Robles, CA)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I will give you two very easy drills that will help with catching the ball. First, have someone facing you and you get on two knees and let them throw the ball at you. Once you catch it, tuck the ball. The second one is having someone throwing the ball to you as you jog, catch the ball with one hand. Go to both sides and be sure to tuck the ball after you catch it. Thanks and good luck next season.

Question:

I play tail back for varsity. I am in the 10th grade, 15 years old, I weigh 165, bench 195, squat 320 and run a 4.8. I was wondering when should I start trying to communicate with college coaches. The current school I play for is known for basketball, not football so according to our coach, we are lucky to get a scout once a season if lucky. This past season I was moved up for some reason which I didn't do that good. I played 3rd string TB and 3rd string SS. So I can't brag about my stats to college coaches. What should I do as to get attention? I am in 10th so I understand if I write them they may not be able to respond yet. Should I still try to communicate? What could I possibly tell them about me? How should I get in contact with them? Email, letters, phone? Thank you for your time.   (Jimmie from Niagara Falls, NY)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Try e-mailing schools and get some camp information. Try to go to camp this summer. Not only will coaches from the school you go to will be there, coaches from smaller schools go as well. Try to have some good plays this upcoming season so you can make a highlight tape to send to coaches. Good Luck!

Question:

Coach, What are the rules regarding visors for high school football? I know that the dark visors are not allowed, but also what is the darkest tint permitted?   (Chris from Medford, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. The only visor you can wear in high school is a clear one. The officials have to be able to see your eyes.

Question:

What are the rules on wearing a dark visor?   (Gregg from Marlton, NJ)

Answer:

In high school you can not wear them. Safety reasons. Thanks for your question.

Question:

I'm am trying to get started as a high school coach, could you advise me on the steps and any certification I should obtain that will increase my success?   (Adam from Cherry Hill, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You will probably need to get a teacher certificate. You might want to go the county superindendent of schools and have your transcripts reviewed to see what you would need to get a teacher certificate. Good Luck! You might also want to try to help coach a team this season. Try to volunteer someplace and then you might catch on.

Question:

Coach, I am a sophomore and play fullback. I have good size but need to work on my speed. My coach likes my size but tells me I need more speed to start. Our fullback position is more of a tailback position. How could I get faster? What should I do?   (Jay Jay from Florida)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The main thing you need to do is to join the track team and get your speed work in that way. You will see great improvement if you do that. Just take some of the drills from track and work on them in the summer when you work out. Good luck and let me know how you made out.

Question:

Dear coach, I am a 6 foot 260 pound sophmore from Brooklyn Center. This past year my sophomore year I started 3 games as center. Oour team didn't do so great this year, we went 0-8. Anyways, I am trying to get bigger and faster for next year. Right now I am lifting weights everyday after school with my head coach, and I dont know if it is working for me. I was wondering if you knew a way that I could lose some weight for next season. I was also wondering if you knew of any good lineman camps around Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan, Iowa, or Illinois.   (Nick from Brooklyn Center, MN)

Answer:

Happy Holidays and Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. First of all you should be doing some type of running. Two or three times a week go out and run two or three miles. Also do some type of agility drills. Ask your coach for some drills. Also the College of New Jersey has an offensive line camp in March. Go to their web page and get in touch with the coach about attending it. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

Coach, I am a sophomore runningback at 5'2" 135 pounds. Do you have any advice on how I should lift to get bigger, stronger, and faster?   (Melvin from Lakewood, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. First, this is a good question to ask at this time of the year. Ask your coach for a program that you could follow until next season. Follow the program and at least two times a week do some running. You should also join the track team in the spring. Remember that to run faster you have to run faster. Thanks and happy holidays.

Question:

Hello Mr. Sellers. I have an unusual and rather unique question. I never played organized football and I am nearing 25 years old and have never attended college. I am interested in attending a small Division 3 school and trying to walk on for the football team. I am 6'1" 225 in excellent shape from playing ice hockey and other sports. I am realistic in my goal. I simply would like to make the team and learn and go from there. I was wondering if you as a coach would be less apt to give someone like myself a chance and what would be the best way to at least get my foot in the door considering my lack of experience and not having any recruit film or anything of that matter. I get many compliments on my never getting tired and being relentless and studying the game as much as possible. I am curious as to what you feel the best approach for myself would be. Thanks plenty and take care.   (J. from Carlisle, PA)

Answer:

First of all thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. Listen to me. Go for you dreams. Believe in yourself and your abilities and go out there and give it your best shot. Many a man has lived his whole life and not taken a chance on what he believed in. Go out there and give it your all. Let the rest take care of itself. Be a fast learner and you should be fine. I don't care if the players come from out of a tree. If they can play then they play. Thanks and good luck to you. Stay in touch and let me know how you made out.

Question:

Hi coach, I was wondering, I played football in 8th grade and then quit. And now I am 2 years behind in Highschool and quit school. Well, now I love football and would love to play. And I want an education. So, I could go back for the two years and graduate late, (that's not too bad because I was put in school early) and play football, but the thing is, I will not know one play in football. How long do you think it will take for me to learn some plays before I can play more often? And will you give me some advice on what to do about going back to school and playing? Thank You sooo much. Your advice just may make up my mind 100%.   (Brad from Wayland)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. First of all, check with your state athletic association to find out about eligibility. You might just be too old. I know in NJ, when the class you are supposed to be in graduates, you are ineligible. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

Hi, I am 13, 5'3 110 pounds. I am the about the fourth fastest on my team, I want to play receiver. If I was a receiver I would be the fastest strongest second tallest and best hands. I need to know how to try to make my coach put me at receiver. I have been defensive end, linebacker, and defensive tackle, tight end, the last two ends.   (Justin from Cinnaminson, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The best advice I could give you would be for you to just work really hard this off season to make sure that you can play receiver. Good Luck to you.

Question:

I'm a junior at Meeker High School and I start at Quarterback. I'm the leader of the team and I was wondering about motivational talks to the team. We are entering playoffs this week and I would like to know some of your words for wisdom.   (Casey from Meeker, CO)

Answer:

I think at this time of the year you do not need to give a big ra-ra speech. Let your team know the importance of the game and go out and give all you have. Good Luck and thanks for your support of Ask the Football coach.

Question:

Hey coach, I am a sophmore and I've played halfback since I was 8. I am 5'7 136lbs and I play Varsity and JV. Now I'm ok with playing cb but I really want to run the ball but my coach wont let me run the ball, yet I run a 4'3 in the 40, and at practice I run the ball at practice but that's all. I don't understand why he doesn't let me run. I respect the coaches and everything too. What should I do?   (J. from Vineland, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. The only thing that I can suggest to you is that you continue to work hard and when you get your chance, make the most of it. Thanks and good luck to you.

Question:

Hi coach, I have a few questions for you... I am a freshman fullback and linebacker. I love football very much and I believe in winning and losing as a team. I play freshman and junior varsity. My coach tends to exclude the freshman alot in different ways. Sometimes when we split up for practice and the practices conclude and we go to get in a huddle with them, he will scream "freshman stay the hell away from me" like we are aliens. Our freshman team is 3-1 and we've won our last three games. We can sometimes be a little roudy but mostly good kids. He always preaches about being a team, but he does this to us? Also he allows the seniors to push us around like bullies... I dont know if he is aware of it or not, but they do sometimes exceed what they need to do to get the team in line. What do you think about this?   (Chris from Collingswood, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your support of Ask the Football Coach. I think some of the freshmen need to get together and ask to have a meeting with the coach and you guys can air out what is bothering you. That is my suggestion. Good Luck to you guys.

Question:

Coach I am in the eighth grade. Right now I am 5'11" 175lbs. I lift two times a week. I am third fastest in my school and one of the strongest. I never played organized football but I do great playing tackle football against friends. What I would like to know what position should I try out for my freshman year? I would like to be a halfback or fullback but my dad said I would probably make a good defense end.   (Charles from Parsippany, NJ)

Answer:

Hey thanks for your support of Ask The Coach. My best advice for you would be for you to talk to your coach and ask him what position does he feel the team could use you. Please continue to work hard and whatever position you choose to play I wish you all the luck in the world.

Question:

Dear coach, I have been out of high school for 3 months now and I have not yet gone to college. You see I was a QB in high school and my senior year I played but I did not start. I started the last game of the season and that's it. See coach I had moved away from my hometown and there I was the starting QB. When I moved to Willingboro I had to be the second QB because they were already set at the position. I probably would have got a scholarship if I would have stayed there. Any way, I can not think about anything else except football. Coach can I still play football? Can I still get recruited? If so what do I do? I am 5'6 170. I really want to play for at least 4 more yaers. I have a tape of my last game. What do I do?   (Jermanie from Willingboro, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First of all go to Wal-Mart and buy about ten blank tapes and make copies of all your good plays and then the whole game. Pick ten schools to mail it to and be sure to send your contact information as well as your high school transcipts. You might also want to write a letter expressing your interest as well as state your desire to even walk on. Hopefully you will hear from all of them but if not don't get discouraged. Go and visit the schools and call and make them know who you are. Write me back and let me know how you made out.

Question:

I have just been reading some of what other people wrote to you and it seemed like you really gave them some good advice so I think I should ask you my question. I'm a freshman, I play safety and running back, I practiced with my team for about a month now and I found out I'm too old to play freshman football by like a month and a half cause I turned 16 in July and now I work out with varsity and I got to learn all new plays and other things. So I don't know what to do, stick with it or quit but I love football but the kids are way way better and bigger. My other question is that since you're a coach you should know, I can't play my senior year cause I'm too old but does this law or whatever count for catholic football too? Thanks a lot, peace.   (Anthony from Bellmawr, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question and support of Ask the Football Coach. First of all, hang in there and make the best of it. Like I have said before, football is life. In life you are going to face some tough times. What will you do? As long as you are playing at a high school, you will be too old to participate when you are a senior. The only way you could play would be to go to a Prep school. Go to www.state.nj.us/njded/directory or www.njais.org or www.njcatholicschools.org and look up the prep schools in NJ. Good luck and I hope that you stick with it.

Question:

Coach, how can I throw the ball farther? I run a 4.25 40, and a 10.97 100. Can I increase my speed in any way? Thanks coach!   (Ryan from Maryville, TN)

Answer:

Thanks for your question and support of Ask the Football Coach. In order to run faster, you need to run faster. Work on running sprints as well as some distance. As far as throwing farther, throw a ball to some of your receivers and work hard at it and in no time at all you will notice a difference. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

Coach, I am getting ready to get out of the army and am planning to go to college to become a teacher and a high school coach. I played high school football but since then I have pretty much been jumping from country to country the past 7 years. My question is how hard is it for someone like me that never played college ball to become a coach? My second question is how do you go about becoming a coach? I was told that to start you should try to be a towel boy for a college team. Thanks for your time.   (Doc from Daphne)

Answer:

Schools are always looking for good coaches. While you are in college, try to volunteer at a local high school. Also find out what credentials you will need to be able to coach in that state. Good luck with your career. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Coach, I have a problem. I am on our high school's football team, and in preseason practice, I was playing strong safety. The coach thought I was too slow even though I could tackle well, and moved me to defensive tackle. The problem is that all of the defensive linemen had already learned their alignments, and positions, and the defensive coach says that he doesn't have time to teach me, and our first game is this Thursday. Do you happen to know where I could find info so I won't be sitting on the bench the whole season? Thanks a lot.   (Paul from Triangle, VA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Remember this: when you get a chance to play, go as hard as you can and try to get a copy of the play book so you can learn the assignments. Also ask some of the other defensive linemen what some of the assignments are. Good luck.

Question:

How do you defend the Wing T?   (Rondy from Colonial Heights, VA)

Answer:

To defend the wing-t, you must know the wing-t. First you must learn the wing-t offense and then you will have a better idea of how to stop it. Thanks for your question. You might be better off seeing me at a clinic for that one. Good Luck.

Question:

Hi coach, I'm 5 ft 6 160 pounds and play linebacker. The school I come from is known for its defense, we're usually top, but I dont know if I have a shot at it because people say I'm slow, I run a 5.93 40. They say it isn't good but I know my plays hit hard, flow good and do my job. And coach has his favorites cause he was a middle school teacher, he picks 3 kids plays them at qb and rb and rb now he wants to put them at lb which I've played since I was 8 years old and I'm a freshmen 14 years old. So coach what should I do? Thanks.   (Jesse from Spring Lake Park, MN)

Answer:

Hang in there and work hard to improve. Listen to your coach. Thanks for your question.

Question:

How can I train to be a good QB?   (Eric from Wheeling)

Answer:

Thanks for the question. First you must learn how to throw. There are a lot of mechanics involved in throwing a football. Lift weights and run to gain strength and endurance. And throw a football every day. Good luck.

Question:

What's up coach? You probably don't remember me even though I'm one of your former players from Cumberland Regional Class of 98. I was just looking through some south jersey football sites trying to reminisce of the memorable season we had in 97'. Ha Ha Ha! I don't want you to get any flashbacks or anything. I'm living in New Mexico now and been serving in the Air Force ever since high school. Good to see that you are such a successful and admirable coach. Good Luck this year coach!   (Ernest from Bridgeton, NJ)

Answer:

Ernest Cooper of course I remember you.......I am glad that you are doing your thing in New Mexico.....I wish you all the luck in the world. Stay in touch.....Peace.

Question:

Dear Coach, my name's Ryan and I am only 13 years old but I have a problem. My parents sent me to a junior high and high school that does not have a football program. I have grown too big to play on in town but would really like to play football in college. I work out by running distance and sprints and I know plays and formations really well. Do you think if I continue to do this I will have a shot at college ball? If you have any suggestions that you feel necessary please tell them to me so I can start working immediately.   (Ryan from Birmingham)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First of all check and find out if you could play football at one of the other local schools. Check with your Athletic Director to find out if it is possible for you to play at another school. Good luck.

Question:

My son is a junior at a 5A school. He will be second string this year, which means he will be sitting on the bench about 3/4 of the time. He would like to move to a 2A school nearby so that he can start. He would start next year at this school where he is now. He is planning on going to college and playing football there. Would you reccomend that he stay in a 5A school or move to the 2A school?   (Janis from Abilene, TX)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I am caught in the middle on this one though. I think if you move him to another school then you would be sending the wrong message to your son. Let him stay where he is. There is probably a better chance of him going to college from the bigger school as opposed to the smaller one.

And tell your son that he is one play away from being a starter. If he works hard then there might be a chance he could get more playing time as the year goes on.

Thanks and good luck to you and your son.

Question:

I play quarterback for Woodrow Wilson and I am having trouble with my arm. While throwing and afterwards I have pains for about 30 min. I've iced it, exercised it, do you think there is any other ways to make my arm stronger or to relieve the pain? Thank You.   (Tareq from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First ask your coach for some exercises for your rotator cuff. You also might need to go to a doctor and get checked out. I hope you play this year. Good luck.

Question:

Coach, I have been receiving mail from top D-1A football schools like Virginia, Kansas State, Illinois, Rutgers. I haven't been offered a scholarship yet but do you think they are waiting to see what I do my senior year?   (Terrell from NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. It seems to me that you are very observant. Although you have received numerous letters, it is safe to assume that you should really do your best this upcoming season to try to make yourself known. If you have access to a video camera and you have a good game, then take the tape and send a copy to the coaches that send you letters. Good luck.

Question:

I'm going into the eigth grade and trying out for QB and only 5'3" and 120 lbs. There are 3 other guys trying out and 5'5", 5'10" and 5'7". What can I do to overcome my size and prepare myself for high school?   (Chris from Wildwood, MO)

Answer:

First of all, thanks for your question. Second, find out if there is another position that might not have as much competition. Stay at quarterback and just work your butt off. Make the coach have a tough decision. Good luck and thanks for your support.

Question:

Coach, I have heard that you are the most electrifying coach to ever walk through the South Jersey area. Is this true and if it is not then why was your Y2K team so outstanding?   (Pete from Edgewood, Atco, NJ)

Answer:

My teams are good because of tough guys like you Pete. I will never forget my two years at Edgewood. It meant the world to me. I will always remember the good and the bad times there. If you feel that way about me then thank you and I feel the same way about you. Remember a coach is only as good as his players and coaches. Enjoy the rest of your summer. I will catch you in Ocean City at Nicky's.

Question:

Coach, I'm just starting JR. HIGH ball but I've been playing rec for 5 years. I've been a fullback every year but this year I don't think the coach thinks I'm fast enough. What should I do? or How do I gain some speed?   (Matt from Virginia)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Now I don't want to sound corny, but you need to listen to the advice of the coach. He has the experience to judge talent and if he wants you to play anything, just suck it up and play there. You might be able to start at another position as opposed to being the fourth string fullback....Good luck!

Question:

Dear Coach, I am a 5'11" 210lb. senior with a 4.87 40 time. My coach is debating on moving me from MLB to DE. I could have sucess at DE but I want to play MLB at the next level. What should I do?   (Joe from Blackwood, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. This is a message for all young men. If it will help the team be better then move and don't become a cancer that will disrupt the team. Good Luck.

Question:

Dear Coach, I am 6'2" and 315lb, I am a Jr. and I am trying to get ready for hell week (running is the big part of what drills I need to do) and I just would like to know what I might need to do to start conditioning for it. I also don't have a way to lift weights in my town because it costs money and just need some help. Thanks alot.   (Travis from Lubbcok, TX)

Answer:

I can really relate to this question. I am trying to get in shape myself for the season. But to help you out, you need to run at least 4 times a week. Work your way up to at least 1 mile. If you can't lift weights then just do as many pushups and sit-ups as possible. Start slow and work up to one mile, meaning start with as far as you can go and then work from there. But get off the computer and start running and doing pushups. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Coach Sellers, I've been trying to gain weight for a few years now. I am a 5 foot 7 130 some pound lineman. Is there a certain kind of diet that I can go on that will help me gain weight as I work out with the team over the summer?   (Mike from Levittown, NY)

Answer:

Try just eating and consistently working out. I don't mean coming one day a week, but being in there for all four days every week. You should expect to gain no more than 5-10 lbs this summer. Thanks for your question and get in the weight room.

Question:

Dear, Coach, I a freshman in highschool and I'm becoming a sophmore next year. I'm 5'10" and I only weigh 130. I lift every single day and I seem to barely get any results. My coaches want me to be become a great football player, but I can't seem to grow physically for the game. What other things should I try? Or do I just keep lifting and lifting?   (Bryan from Charleston, SC)

Answer:

Listen to me. You are not going to try anything that is not natural. For example, you should lift and run and eat and not try any of that growth stuff. It is not proven to be safe. So, to answer your question, you should just lift and lift and lift some more. Eat more, or what you can do is to try some of those protein shakes. They are about 400 to 500 calories apiece. Thanks for your question and good luck to you.

Question:

I am doing a debate project for Santa Monica College, and I was wondering if I could get your viewpoint on a debate topic. It would be greatly appreciated!! I'm arguing that NCAA players should not recieve paychecks for playing their sport. Could you be so kind as to respond and let me know your views. Thank you for your time!   (Natalie from Los Angeles, CA)

Answer:

I will try to be as honest as possible. I believe that NCAA players should receive a pay check only because they cannot go out and work. They should be allowed to have some spending money to go out to eat late at night or even go to the local movies. Many times these athletes spend 20 hours a week involved in their sport so why shouldn't they receive a small stipend to help supplement their income. They are expected to go to class as well as practice everyday or lose their scholarship, so they should receive some kinds of compensation. Thanks for your question. Good luck on your project.

Question:

Dear Coach, I'm a 165lbs 5'11" Freshman heading into my sophmore year in High School. Last year I was the 3rd string QB and started at MLB. The 2nd string QB is often injured and I think my coach wants me to start next year at quarterback. I already weight lift, do you have any other tips to help be become the best QB in Colorado?   (Patrick from Snomass Village, CO)

Answer:

Be willing to be a team player. Give your team the best chance for winning. Do whatever it takes for your team to reach their full potential. Continue to lift weights and make the coach have a very tough decision to make this fall. Good luck to you and thanks for your question.

Question:

This is a fullback from Scotland High School. I am a big guy (5'11", 280) like Ron Dayne was. People often compare me to Dayne when he was in high school. I was wondering if you had any old tapes on Dayne in his high school career. If so please let me know if they are availible. Thank you.   (Angelo from Philadelphia, PA)

Answer:

I am not sure that we can get a hold of those tapes. Whoever has them probably enjoys watching him run all over the competition. If you are as good as Ron Dayne, then you have a really bright future in front of you. Good luck and thanks for your question.

Question:

Coach, I have another question. I can throw the ball farther but I can't seem to find my spiral. Is it because I'm not getting my hand through? If you could give me some tips I would really appreciate it.   (Sam from Hatton, AL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. You might be gripping the ball too tight on the release. Remember, the last thing to leave the ball should be your index finger. Also please remember to follow through.

Question:

Dear Coach Sellers
Next year will be a brand new year for 2nd year Lindenwold Lions. How do you feel about some of Lindenboro Chargers players coming for the new year? And what do you think they will bring to the team? I myself am also coming up this year. You might not remember me, I was the Lindenboro Chargers fullback for the unlimited team in the 2001 season. I talked to you a couple of times during Charger practice. And I look forward to playing for you next year coach. See you the begining of football season.   (Calvin from Lindenwold, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question... We are very excited about the future of Lindenwold Football. With the whole team back as well as some good young players coming up, we can't wait to get started. Good luck and keep your grades up.

Question:

I'm a small HB about 5'5" for Timber Creek. I will be a senior next year. But the head coach won't give me the ball. I know I have potential but Coach Harvey won't run me the ball. I scored the first touchdown in my school's history against Woodrow Wilson and lead the team in yards that game. My coach didn't like for what ever reason. When the last game came around he benched me on defense and that really upset me. I ended up telling the coach how I felt in a inappropriate way. What should I do?   (Jason from Erial, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I think the best thing for you to do is to take all of your energy and get better so the coach has no choice but to play you. Good Luck.

Question:

Coach, I'm a 5'10" 155 pound freshman tailback. Is there any drils or workouts I can do to lower my 40 time? My coach wants me to gain 15 pounds by fall. How could I reach that goal?   (Ross from Hatton, AL)

Answer:

First thanks for the question. Remember the old saying that if you want to run faster you have to run faster.....I suggest you run some 100's and some 60's and some 40's. In order to gain that weight, you will have to lift weights and work hard to achieve your goals. Again thanks for the question and good luck.

Question:

Coach I'm a 5'10" 140 pound freshman QB. I can throw the ball about 45 yards. I want 2 be throwing the ball about 60 yards or more by the fall. I bench 165 and squat 285. Is there any workouts I can do to increase my arm strength or drills to do?   (Sam from Hatton, AL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First, go to the baseball coach in your school and ask him for some drills that will give you some arm strength. Second thing to do is to go out with some of your friends and throw the ball. The only way to throw farther is to throw farther. Thanks again and good luck.

Question:

I am a 6 foot 250 pound soph. I need to become faster and stronger before next season. I would like to loose about 25 pounds. I tried to use the workout program my coach has but I fell it is not working for me. He is more of a basketball coach. But anyway I was wandering if you had any tips and a progam to help me reach my goal. Next season our football program might crash so I am planing to tranfer to another school. Because of the ossaa rules I cant talk to that coach yet, so I can't get a workout program from him. I know it is going to be hard to go over there and start, so any help from you will help greatly. I need something that will help with my lineman skills and if it all works out I might be able to play fullback. Thanks for your help.   (Bryan from Lone Wolf, OK)

Answer:

You should do the program that the coach has you in. If you feel that it is not appropriate for you then you need to do some extra work. Also try not to eat anything after 8pm every night. Drink all you want but don't eat anything. Thanks for your question and good luck to you. Remember that in order to run fast you must run fast.

Question:

I am the quarterback from Woodbury High and I am coming off a season where I threw for over 1000 yards and 11 td passes, and I ran for over 1000 yards and 15 tds rushing. As a junior my teammates and I felt that I should have received 1st team Colonial Conference. Do you think these stats are capable of receiving such awards? The one who received the award is about 6'5", and I'm 5'9", we played his team and I dominated. What do you think about that? It may seem that I only look out for myself, but my teammates come first. Since I didn't receive the award I will dominate every team I play in 2002.   (Melvin from Woodbury, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question Melvin. That is a good attitude to have because you must remember that you can only control what you do. You have no control over what others do. Please remember that picking the all-conference teams is hard and all the coaches are involved. I wish you all the luck in the world. You are a good quarterback and you will be a very good player next year. Just work hard and believe in your dreams.

Question:

Dear coach, I'm writing you again, first to thank you for your advice and secondly to ask yet another question. I play for the Sheldon Williams Spartans football team. There are two divisions in our city, first 4a (the bigger school, and more competitive), and second 3a (the small school, flag football kind of thing). Our school is really small and should be in 3a, but thanks to our amazing coach's Ron Cherkas, and Tim McFadden who have put together a great program, we are placed into 4a. We are very greatful for this because two years ago we won provincials.

Unfortunally our team has takin a turn for the worse, guys arn't working out, the team's numbers are falling, and the coaches feel that we aren't putting any effort or passion into the team. This for that first time is really true. I by myself can't recruit any new players or motivate people to work out, and when I try to get others to help me they seem to not care.

The bottom line is that my football team is in a major crisis and I want to win a provincial championship before I have to move on to university. Can you please give me some ideas on how to bring my team back on track. Or just help out in anyway possible. Thanks for your time coach, and please write back soon.   (DJ from Regina, SK)

Answer:

First of all, thanks again for your question. It gives me great pleasure to answer questions from eager young players like yourself. I would only suggest that you and some of the veteran players have a players' only meeting and discuss some of your concerns.

Question:

Hi Coach, I'm a highschool junior and I'm going out for football this year. I have no experience whatsoever and I want to play defensive end. I've been wrestling for 3 years now, so that might benefit towards my game.

Right now I'm 5'10 and 150 lbs. (But looking to build enough muscle to make me 185-190 lbs.) I'm an average build and lift average weight. I've been taking my 200 grams of protein and running 3 miles a day. I have great ambition and look forward to playing. Can you give me any tips? warnings? suggestions? Any and all of your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Again.   (KeAli'i from Pukalani, HI)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. The main thing is to enjoy playing. Don't make it a job or you will hate it. Every wrestler I have ever coached had one thing......great hands........so if that is you then you will be fine. Try running some sprints on some of the days as well as distance. Good luck to you.

Question:

Hi coach, I'm 6'1 and 195 pounds, I play Rush end for my high school football team. I'm one of the stronger guys on the team, and I workout everyday! But the only thing I can't seem to get myself to do everyday is run, and get my cardio up. Is there any program in which you could give me that I could follow that would boost my cardio a lot before that next season. I will be willing to do anything you throw at me so please write back soon. Thank you.   (DJ from Regina, SK)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First I would suggest that you start working out with the track team. You need to do some distance, sprints, and agility drills. Example: Monday run three miles, Tuesday do 10 60-yard sprints and 10 40-yard sprints. Wednesday do agility drills....ask your coach for some. Again thanks for your question and good luck to you.

Question:

Hey coach, I'm a 5'10", 155 lbs. junior, but I am strong. I can bench press 260 lbs., and squat 320 lbs. I have tried a lot of different workouts, but I want a really good football workout. I play defensive back and got honorable mention last year and I play split end, but I want to move to RB, so I have to gain some weight. Do you have a good workout for me to do?   (Paul from Janesville, WI)

Answer:

Paul, thanks for your question. The workout we use is based on percentages and we concentrate on our core lifts: Bench, squat, clean, push press and deadlifts. We try to break them up so you are not doing too much every day. Every other lift to us is an auxillary lift, meaning that you do all of those after you do the core lifts first. Hope this helps, good luck. Also try to work in some running and stretching. Good luck.

Question:

In the last ten years what are the top 5 states for producing Division 1 football players?   (Moe from Fowlerville, MI)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. That is a very good and interesting question. I really don't think I have the answer for that one. If I had to guess then I would probably say that Texas, California and Florida have to be the top ones. But to defend my home state, I think New Jersey has put out their fair share. We had two starters on Miami's National Championship team. Again thanks for your question and keep the faith.

Question:

Dear coach, I'm a junior, 5' 9" 150lbs and this season I played through two injuries without seeing the doctor. I had a groin injury my 1st game and a hamstring pull and my 2nd, had to sit the 3rd game and wasn't really back until my 7th game and i started killing it. I had 5 int's and 31 tackles in the last 3 games and got no recognition but a person that did get recognized had 3 int's and 38 tackles but their team won the state title. My team went 4-8, do you think that is the case and what could I do to get better and receive a scholarship by next season? Go Bruins!   (Mike from Muskegon, MI)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First of all, getting a scholarship involves a lot of people. First, your coach has to send out film or have coaches when they come out in the spring watch film on a player. Then it is up to the coaches to recruit the player or not. If that doesn't work for you, then put together a highlight tape of yourself and an unofficial copy of your transcript and mail it yourself to as many schools as possible. Along with the tape, send as much information about you as possible. You might want to put together an athletic resume to help the coaches be able to get in touch with you. Thanks for your question and Michigan is getting killed...LOL! Happy New Year!

Question:

How can there be an offside and a holding penalty on the same play?   (Jon from New Port Richey, FL)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. There can indeed be an offside and a holding on the same play. If a player lines up offside and the play starts and someone holds, then in fact there can be both infractions on one play. Happy New Year!

Question:

I'm 5'11" 185, I play running back and LB, I never started at the varsity level and I have just transfered to a new school. What should I do?   (Keith from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Ok, first thanks for your question. The first thing you should do is introduce yourself to the football coach at your new school. Find out what type of weight training they are doing and get involved with the team that way. Also, try some different sports they can help you get in shape as well. Again thanks for your question and have a good holiday season.

Question:

A football team enters the field with an opponent's jersey and then throws it to the ground where the whole team stomps on it. Do you feel disciplinary action should be taken against the players' coach? The referees threw a penalty flag for unsportmanslike conduct before the game even started.   (Pat from Woodbridge, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I think the coach will have some explaining to do. I am pretty sure the administration of the school will talk to him about such behavior. It is important that we as coaches don't go too far.

Question:

Hi my name is Farhan Rana and I go to Absegami High School. This is my second year playing football for them. Well I was a back up quarterback last year as a freshman. This year I am a soph. but I am a back up again. My question is that what can I do to start or is it that the coaches dont know how to coach because on Friday the 16 we played Oakcrest. The score was 21 to 0 in first half I asked the coach to put me in but he said in a minute. Well it was 1 and 20 sec left when he was going to put me in. Do you think was that fair or not? Final score 34 to 0 and I didn't get in. Thank you for your time.   (Farhan from Galloway, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I am not going to speak for another coach and his decision to play or not play you. I suggest that you go to camp, lift weights and run to improve so next year you are not the back up. Again, thanks for your question.

Question:

Coach I am a freshman at Woodrow Wilson High School. I am about 5'7" and I weigh about 153 lbs. I want to play defensive back next year at the jv level but I am out of shape. Besides running and lifting weights what could I do to gain weight and increase muscle mass?   (Robert from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Running and lifting will help you. Also try to eat more food. Not just food but good food that will help you grow.

Question:

My brother-in-law is Lonnie Teasley and he played on the offensive line for Willingboro. I just want to know, do you think he would be recruited by a top College football School? If he did, who would recruit him and also how would his stock stand against the top prospects in country that are offensive linemen?   (Thomas from Willingboro, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. At this point if schools haven't set up visits with him then maybe he isn't a scholarship player. I saw them last weekend but it is tough to judge them with Woodrow Wilson's defense being so tough. Again thanks for your question and have a good holiday.

Question:

I have a 5'6", 165 lb. 13-year old at home who wants to play freshman football next year, but has had no formal experience yet. Besides the obvious (signing him up with a local team), what can he do NOW to prepare for tryouts next year?   (Frances from Sicklerville, NJ)

Answer:

Have him get involved in as many different activities as he can before next season. This will keep him active and allow him to try different things. Thanks for your question.

Question:

My brother is Marquis Beverly #21 for Camden Catholic and boyfriend is #56 for Woodrow Wilson, two of the very best teams in South Jersey this season. Well they both are seniors and are receiving mail from good colleges. What I was wondering, being that they are receiving this mail and do apply to them, does this give them a greater chance of being accepted on a scholarship?   (Quraana from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. First the letters are great, but if they are not getting called then don't worry about the letters. They both have a real good chance at a scholarship because if they are good enough in this day and age, then they will be found and offered a scholarship. They should have visits set up for the winter already. If you are worried about them getting a scholarship then don't, because I am sure that college coaches know who they are and will offer them a scholarship. Thanks again for your question and good luck to both of them.

Question:

Coach, I'm a junior at Davenport Central High School in Davenport, Iowa, and my goal is to be a football caoch, and I was wondering what classes I should take in college to accomplish this goal. Thanx.   (Josh from Davenport, IA)

Answer:

Thanks for your question Josh. In New Jersey, what you need to do is either become a teacher or have a job that will give you the flexibility to coach. I suggest becoming a teacher and take any classes that are in that major. Also pick something that you are not going to mind talking about every day for the rest of your career. Thanks and good luck.

Question:

I had to find out on my own about the nonstandard SAT and ACT testing and also the student disability process with the NCAA Clearinghouse in order for my son to file a waiver if he dosen't make the SAT or ACT scores he needs to have to become eligible to play football at a Division I or Division II college. He is classified NI and is a senior. I have filed all the paper work. He is now waiting til the season is over to see if there will be a college recruiter that would like him on their team. My question is, will the college recruiter know that he plans to file a waiver in the spring if he doesn't become eligible for Divison I or Divison II colleges? Will they take him and wait for the waiver process?   (Mrs. D. from Sicklerville, NJ)

Answer:

Mrs. D. thanks for your question. First, if the school is interested in him they will find out all this information when they come in to recruit. I suggest that you get a copy of his grades and have his IEP checked because some of the grades can be changed to match his disability. Any school that will recruit your son will find out all they need to know. As a matter of fact, they should know from when they came in the spring and I was still there. If you have any problems or concerns please don't hesitate to call Lindenwold High School and ask me. Thanks and good luck. His speech at the touchdown club almost made me cry.

(RE: NCAA Disability Services Certification And Waiver Process)

Question:

Are you familar with Highland Regional High School? If you are, who do you think is one of the best players on the team?   (Terrance from Blackwood, NJ)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. I really haven't had a chance to see Highland play this year. I am unsure who any of their players are. Last year we scrimmaged them when I was at Edgewood. With some of the kids going to Timber Creek (we play them the day before Thanksgiving) and graduation and not seeing them this year I don't know who is on their team.

Question:

I am the strength & conditioning coach for the high school football team. I have a freshman quarterback who started varsity this year, who did really well for a freshman. He is 126 yards away from 1000 yards & one game left. His name is AJ and he is 5'11 145 pounds, still somewhat little for a varsity starter. As a team we do a kinda of "bigger faster stronger" type workout (squats, box squats, bench, towel bench, cleans, & deadlifts, plus auxillaries). Should I have him do the bfs type program or should have him do his own "QB" workout? Or should I just add special "auxillary" lifts to the program? What workout to do, & what auxillaries to do?   (Ed from Akron, OH)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Keep him on the program that the team is on. The auxiliaries should be things to strengthen his shoulders. Try to find any workouts that baseball pitchers do and use some of those lifts. Also have him throw every day for ten minutes. He should also go to camp. If there is somewhere in the area that does a camp in the spring then he should go. Hope I was some help. Thanks again for your question. Good luck!

Question:

I'm only 5ft. 7in. How can I work on blocking 220 lb. linebackers?   (Joshua from Woodbury, NJ)

Answer:

Remember to stay low and use your legs. In the off season lift weights and run to get your legs stronger. Try pushing cars in a parking lot. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Hello, I am two days away from finishing my B-Squad season, and after all my hard work during the offseason (I gaining 35 Ibs by weight training and lost body fat pct), I was unable to start both ways. I know this was because I have poor cardiovascular fitness. My question is, how would I be able to improve this in the off season? Does long distance running hinder sprinting speed? I turn 16 in less than a month. I am very careful about how I supplement myself. I take quality protein, creatine, and l-glutamine, in proper dosages and time intervals. My question is, when I exceed 180 Ibs, do you believe it would be safe for me to take a product with ephedra in it? (AST-SS Dymetadrine Xtreme) I understand that you have to work yourself up to maximum dosage w/ ephedra. If I am very cautious and listen to the directions word for word, would this be a safe product for me? Thanks.   (Matthew from Owatonna, MN)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Only use natural things like food that you eat, be very careful with the supplements. I think if you lift and eat well you can gain weight. Good luck.

(Also check out "NFL bans ephedrine, other stimulants")

Question:

I played football my freshman year. I played QB and wound up having to quit because of back problems. Through out highschool up until last March I could throw a football about 60 yards and very accurate. What happened is I messed up nerves in my neck, I haven't been able to throw the ball anywhere's near as far as I could. What can I do to get my strength back and how can I make my back stronger? Myself and a friend were thinking about playing semi pro, do you know of any teams?   (Andrew from NJ)

Answer:

There is a team in West Deptford and they have a webpage.

There is another team in Buena. Just begin lifting weights and running to get into shape.

Question:

How is the new team over at Lindenwold doing this year coach? I was looking through the South Jersey Sports and I thought that I would say hello. Good luck this year Coach Sellers.   (Byron from Sicklerville, NJ)

Answer:

We are 0-4 right now but we are playing hard and we will keep doing that. I just wish I had you and NaNa on our team. We will be okay, we are just very young. Hope all is well with you.

Question:

Coach, I'm a Freshman at Rutgers in Camden and want to play football for the school up in New Brunswick. I played for Woodrow Wilson as a MLB but now I'm out of shape and I really want to play that postion. I'm at about 270, what should I do to get in shape before next season?   (LeVar from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

Start doing some type of running and weight lifting program. You have plenty of time before the next season begins. Good Luck.

Question:

Coach, how can I gain speed in two weeks before football practice starts?   (Craig from Lancing, MI)

Answer:

Don't try to kill yourself. Just do some distance and finish it up with some sprints. For example, run two miles then do 6-50 yd sprints and 8-40 yd sprints. I don't think you should expect to gain too much speed in two weeks. This also should be a lesson to you that you should be training all year. Thanks for your question and good luck.

Question:

Coach, I am a freshman at Central Mountain High School, I love football and am kinda medium build, 5'6", 145 lbs. I am already in shape because since school let out my coach has our team on a lifting program. I really wanna get bigger, last year I started both sides of the ball. I want the same this year and I know fitness is a factor. I am a tail back, this year I went to PIAA District 6 championships for track so I have speed now, I just want more mass. I've looked at program after program and all I get is more confused. How many reps? High low? How long to rest? Please help.   (Jeff from Lock Haven, PA)

Answer:

Dear Jeff, Thanks for your question. First let me say that at no cost should you EVER! do steroids. Go to GNC or your local gym and ask for anything that will build mass. Most of these shakes can add about 500-1000 calories after a workout. Train hard and remember to keep running so you don't gain mass and lose speed. Good luck this year and keep me abreast as to what is going on.

Question:

Our Football Summer practice starts in about 3 1/2 weeks. Is there anyway that I can get in shape by then? Also do you suggest using creatine?   (Aaron from Lexington, KY)

Answer:

Thanks for your question. Now don't try to kill yourself but here is a suggestion. Try running every day until camp starts. You can also lift 5 times a week and you might not be in the best shape but you also will not pass out when practice starts. Try mixing some distance with some sprints. I hope you have a workout plan because I wouldn't suggest that you ask your coach. He might be upset. Good luck!

Question:

Hi my name is John and due to an early summer injury my college football career is over. I'm a freshman in college and love football and I love football and would like to get into coaching but have no clue how to get into while still in school. What steps could I take, what classes, etc.? I know once I graduate I can become a Grad Asst. but I want to start before that. Please help me if possible.   (John from Lexington, KY)

Answer:

John, I enjoy seeing someone with so much enthusiasm for the game of football. Your first step would be to try to help your own college by asking the coach if you can be a student coach. You might even earn a scholarship by doing that. If that doesn't work, try the local high schools. I am sure they would be willing to have you maybe volunteer for the first year and then maybe you might work your way into a paid position. I wish you all the luck in the world and may we continue to have people like yourself so in love with this great game. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Hi, My name is Aaron Shipley and I play middle linebacker for my team. The season is over and lots of high school coaches have told me to bulk up and try defensive end. I didn't really want to since I have been so succsesful at MLB. I played 2 and 1/2 games this year and had to quit early because of a concussion. I had 24 tackles in those 2 and 1/2 games. Is that good? Also do you think I should quit MLB and try out for DE next year in high school football?   (Aaron from State Center)

Answer:

Aaron, I would suggest that you play whatever position the coach asks you to. Those are pretty good stats for two and half games. Also you probably won't have too many collisions playing end and maybe the coach wants you on the field and not in the hospital. Thanks for your question and have a great summer.

Question:

Coach, I am a sophmore. I play varsity receiver. I was wondering if you think taking creatine would enhance my performance. I want to get a little stronger but don't want to gain too much weight. I don't know if you know much about this area but I thought you could be of some help.   (Kyle from Cinnaminson, NJ)

Answer:

First of all I would suggest that you lift weights and run. Your coach should have a program that you should follow. I also believe that if you lift and run on a consistent basis you will see the strength and muscle gains you are looking for. Good luck and thanks for your question.

Question:

I played football at Gloucester Catholic and transferred to Triton High School. They wouldn't let me play cause they said it was too late. So, I'm not playing my senior year. I was wondering how I can try out for the West Deptford Broncos?   (Louie from Blackwood, NJ)

Answer:

My advice would be to look up the information for the team in the phone book and give them a call. They are a pretty well run organization. Thanks for your question and good luck.

Question:

Coach I am currently a freshman in college and I'm writing you this letter out of frustration. I'm frustrated because I know I'm a very good and solid player yet I have only received about 5 min of playing time. My coach tells me that I'm a good athlete and that I have the tools to play the game. I'm just tired of running scout team, and the funny part is I do a good job at that too. I make players miss and run through tackles yet I feel as though due to an injury in camp that I have been looked over. It's getting harder and harder to come out and practice hard everyday. What should I do to keep the interest?   (Kevin from West Deptford, NJ)

Answer:

Just try to remember that of the guys that start most of them were on that scout team. That's why you have to give it your all every play. Believe me the coaches are watching. There was a player I had that didn't play the whole season, but at the end we needed a player and he came in and broke three school records. Hang in there and keep working hard, it will pay off, there is light at the end of that tunnel. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Is it true that if football players that are being recruited for division one colleges, but are not eligible to get a scholarship for that school because of grades or SAT scores? That they have to go to a prep college and then transfer to a division one college. Are there scholarships given to play football at two years colleges? Congradulation on being 2 and 0. Looks like your Edgewood team will go all the way. I heard you are the great coach, the kids of 2001 football team will hate losing you to another school.   (John from Williamstown, NJ)

Answer:

Some schools can take in students who do not qualify under NCAA guidelines. If they do the student can not receive a scholarship his first year. Some schools do send players to prep schools, but if a student goes to a prep school he can go to any school he wants. Thanks for your question.

Question:

How are the all conference, all south jersey and all state players chosen?   (#72 from South Jersey)

Answer:

The all conference players are selected by the coaches of the conference. All South Jersey and All State are chosen by the media. Thanks for your question.

Question:

How well do you think Mike Grant and Charles Duckett will do their junior year playing at varsity level again this year, and also will they be scouted this year for their senior year? Who will the coaching team be next year? I heard there will be some changes.   (John from Williamstown, NJ)

Answer:

I think that Mike and Charles will do very well this season. They seemed focused and determined to improve their game. As far as their coach next year I am not sure who will be their coach, and I really would like to get through this season first before we discuss the coaching situation next season. Thanks for your question and Go Eagles!!!!!!

Question:

How can I get in shape as a football player? And if you are wondering, my uncle is Darrell Wilson of the University of Wisconsin and coach at Woodrow Wilson.   (Marcus from Pennsauken, NJ)

Answer:

At this late date it might be very difficult to get into shape for this season. With practice so close to starting it may be cutting it close to try to find yourself working out for the season. But, some of the things you should do are run sprints as well as distance, and lift weights. Do drills that are specific to your position. Thanks for your question. Good luck and tell your uncle I said hello.

Question:

I'm going to be a senior in Paul VI, and I need to gain weight fast. What can I do to get bigger and stronger and faster? What things can I do?   (Luis from Sicklerville, NJ)

Answer:

Well Luis, I really am into being naturally big. Lift weights and eat a good diet and you will gain strength and size. Just lift and eat a good healthy diet. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Coach, I am an Edgewood Alumni (1988) and I played under Coach Lee. I've always thought I should have been used more during the season. I was a decent ball carrier, a great catcher and route runner and better than average LB/DE. However, I felt the coaching staff was only interested in those who exemplified extrordinary talent (which was only a few guys). I know that through "coaching" I would have at least been in the position to get a scholarship to a junior college. Do you believe in discovering/recognizing potential talent in a mediocre player that can be developed, or are great players always great players?   (Frank from Willingboro, NJ)

Answer:

I feel it is important for every player on our team to be coached. They all make the sacrifice to become the best they can. The other thing that is important for people to realize is that everyone is not going to be the best player on the team. There is only one football and it is a team sport that is based on eleven people doing the same thing. Also, keep in mind that the high school coach gets the information out to the colleges, and it is up to the college coaches to decide which players they want.

Question:

I played football for a semi pro team that folded and I already have a uniform and all I want to do is play the game. Do you know of any semi pro teams in South Jersey that I probably could try out for?   (Ronald from Millville, NJ)

Answer:

I know of a team in West Deptford. They play on Saturday's. They are called the Broncos and they have a web page at http://www.eteamz.com/newjerseybroncos/

Question:

Is there still an all star football game played at Rowan? I played in it as a senior and it was sponsored by the Kiwanias Club of S.J. Is this game still played, and if so where? Thank You.   (Jerry from Quakertown, PA)

Answer:

The name of the game is now the Flame Bowl. It is still played at Rowan. It was played last month (June).

Question:

What is the outlook for Edgewood football this coming season? Also, do you have any feel for the Teaneck program and how they will fare?   (Jeff from Chattanooga, TN)

Answer:

Edgewood returns a wealth of players, and hopefully we will remain healthy and we should be competitive this season.

As far as Teaneck is concerned, I can't really say, seeing that I now reside in South Jersey. I can say this though, they will have a tough time of it, having to play Hackensack, Clifton, and the likes of that very tough NNJIL league they play in. Thanks for your question.

Question:

Why does the state of New Jersey produce so many talented football players and lose almost all of them to Universities in other states, i.e. Ron Dayne, Donavan Darius?   (Tari from Camden, NJ)

Answer:

A lot of the guys want to leave home and play for big time programs. Rutgers and Temple are not doing that well and the young men see a chance to go play on TV every week, and so they go for the big time as opposed to staying and trying to build a winner. Most star players want to play for a team that has a winning tradition. And just think, if you were 17 and Terry Shea from Rutgers came to your house and Joe Paterno from Penn State came by, where would you go???? Thanks for your question.

Question:

On average, how long can high school football athletes practice per week during the season?   (Kelse from Piscataway, NJ)

Answer:

On average, most teams practice between 10-14 hours, approximately two hours a day. One thing that regulates this at large spread-out regional schools is the need for most of the students to ride an activity bus to go home. Schools in the city have it a little easier, they can practice almost as long as they want because most of the students walk home.

Question:

  1. What is the difference between the Rams and Titans?
  2. What is the call if, on a kickoff, the kicker kicks the ball off of the ref going past 10 yards and comes back to him. Does the kicking team get the ball?   (Gregg from West Berlin, NJ)

Answer:

  1. There is no difference between the two teams...........it should be a good game.
  2. The positioning of the officials is such that they should not be hit by the ball in this situation.
