By Derryk Sellers
Well, the summer is gone and now it is time to put on the pads and begin another exciting season of high school football. Who will win the championship? What team will surprise everyone with a late season run? Which team will falter under the intensity of making that post season push? That, my friends, is why we play the games. I can guarantee you one thing, it will be very exciting every week to try to find out who is who.
There are many coaching changes this season to add to the confusion of who's who, but just stick around it is going to be a fun ride. One of the new coaches who I consider a friend is Felton Jones at Winslow. He is formerly the receivers coach at Rowan, and look out for the Eagles. With the return of all South Jersey running back Shonn Green, look for big things for the Eagles.
Also Tom Maderia leaves Holy Cross, where he had built a powerhouse, to take over at Burlington Township. The big question is, will he be able to build the powerhouse he had at Holy Cross? My answer is yes. Give him some time.
One of my other good friends, Ty Belford, is coming back to coach Palmyra. He wanted to return to his alma mater and Palmyra hasn't seen this much excitement since they put in the Tacony-Palmyra bridge. I wish him all the luck in the world.
As far as my own team, lets just say the I have been teaching my coaches how to change diapers and mix up formula. We will be very young. We only have five seniors. We will be so young that I had to order extra car seats for all the away games. Just kidding. We will only start two seniors on offense and one on defense. That, my friends, is a young team.
I would just like to wish all the teams, players, coaches, (politically correct) band, and cheerleaders good luck this season. Like I told my wife last week, see you in December!
