Tuesday, August 3, 2004

By Chuck Betson
Atlantic City Surf Director of Media Relations

The Atlantic City Surf are proud to announce that Surf outfielder Ozzie Timmons and pitcher Archie Corbin were named the Atlantic League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of July. It is the first time in Surf history that the team has received both the Player and the Pitcher of the Month in the same month. The Surf went 17-9 in the month of July and the big month from both players helped the Surf clinch the first half southern division title in early July and jump out to a hot start at the beginning of the second half of the season.

In July, Timmons hit .356, collected 32 hits, including 5 doubles and 11 homeruns, scored 19 runs, drove in 23, walked 8 times. He finished the month with a .778 slugging percentage and a .414 on base percentage. Timmons’ big month was nothing out of the ordinary for him. He leads the league in homeruns with 21, RBI’s with 70, slugging percentage at .679, and is tied for the lead in extra base hits with 43. He is also third in the league in batting average with a .354 average and is fifth in on-base percentage at .429.

Archie Corbin had an equally impressive month. In his four starts, Corbin was a perfect 4-0 with a microscopic ERA of 1.80. In his 25 innings he allowed only five earned runs while striking 29 and walking 14. Opponents hit a dismal .165 off of him in the heat of July. Corbin was in the bullpen for his first three appearance for the Surf before making his first start on July 9th at Somerset.

You can watch Timmons, Corbin and all the other exciting Surf players in the Atlantic League playoffs at the Sandcastle beginning on September 22nd. For regular season or playoff ticket information, contact the Surf ticket office at (609) 344-7873.
