Chavez, Surf Slow Down Patriots

The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-3 on Tuesday night at Sandcastle Stadium. The Surf scored five unanswered runs in the third and fourth inning to take the lead for good.

Anthony Chavez started and went eight innings for the Surf, allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out nine Patriots. Ned Darley earned the save with a scoreless ninth. Raul Marval led the Surf bats with two hits and three RBI. Third baseman Dario Delgado also had two hits and drove in a run.

Erik Grunwald suffered the loss after pitching six innings for Somerset. He surrendered five runs on eight hits and struck out three. Designated hitter Jhonny Perez hit a two-run homer in the third, one of his three hits. Tony Gsell also collected three base knocks.

The teams square off for the fourth and final time this series Wednesday night at 6:35pm. The Surf will throw Andy Zwirchitz against the Patriots’ Justin Jensen. The first 1,000 kids through the gates ages 3-12 will receive nesting doll #3 courtesy of Pepsi.
