South Jersey Baseball:
Riversharks Fall to Pennsylvania, 6-1

Sunday, July 25, 2004

By Don Delaney
Camden Riversharks Media Relations Manager

The Camden Riversharks fell to the Pennsylvania Road Warriors for the first time on Sunday afternoon, 6-1, at Campbell's Field. The Riversharks entered the game 9-0 against the Road Warriors in 2004 before the defeat.

The Road Warriors grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Rob Cafiero led off the frame with a single and moved to second base when Ramiro Chamizo walked with one out. After a Brett Laxton wild pitch, Cafiero came in on a Ryan Owen ground out.

The Riversharks were able to pull even in the bottom of the fifth inning as they put runners on first and second with no one out. After Tony Rodriguez advanced the runners into scoring position, Quincy Foster ripped a single past the drawn in infield to score Travis Anderson, who started the inning with a hit by pitch.

Pennsylvania used a lead off triple by Isbel Iglasias in the top of the seventh inning to manufacture their second run of the game. Chamizo followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Road Warriors in front, 2-1.

The Road Warriors tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as Rob Cafiero’s two-out single scored Henry Encarnacion to give Pennsylvania a 3-1 edge. The Road Warriors tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth to close the scoring.

Brett Laxton pitched well for the Riversharks, but was forced to take the loss after allowing three earned runs in eight innings of work. Laxton, who fell to 2-6 on the year, allowed seven hits and struck out five.

Jim Stoops, making his first start for the Road Warriors, won for the second time in 2004. He did not walk a batter, struck out four and allowed just one run in six innings of work.

The Riversharks and Road Warriors meet in the middle game of a three-game series on Monday, July 26 at 6:35 p.m. Hall of Famer Robin Roberts will be in attendance to throw out the first pitch.
