South Jersey Baseball:
Steward Pitches Camden into First Place

Wednesday, August 25, 2004

By Don Delaney
Camden Riversharks Media Relations Manager

It took a future Hall of Famer to keep Jaime Steward from reaching every pitcher’s dream. Rickey Henderson broke up Jaime’s Steward bid for a no hitter with two outs in the top of eighth, but the Riversharks took over first place in the South Division with a 2-0 victory over the Newark Bears on Wednesday night at Campbell’s Field.

Steward was masterful all evening long as he struck out ten and allowed just one hit in eight innings of work. Steward would have to fight each inning however as he allowed one bae runner in six of the eight innings he tossed.

But the Riversharks would come through with the bats in the seventh inning as they scored their only two runs in the home half of the seventh. Troy Cameron’s singled home Chris Widger with the first run of the game, while Dwight Maness scored on a Tony Rodriguez fielder’s choice.

Joe Strong would allow a hit in the top of the ninth inning, but the Camden closer would induce a 6-4-3 double play and then struck out Danny Clyburn to end the game for his eighth save of the year.

The Riversharks begin a three-game series at Sandcastle Stadium against the Atlantic City Surf on Thursday, August 26. The game will feature Camden’s Jim Bullinger against Rob Corrado of Atlantic City.
