South Jersey Baseball:
Thunder Take Third Straight Win, 5-1

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

By Dan Loney
Trenton Thunder Director of Broadcasting

Matt DeSalvo allowed one run over six innings for his third straight win and Dee Brown's three-run home run capped a five-run 5th Inning in Trenton's 5-1 win over New Hampshire in Eastern League play.

DeSalvo (4-1), who won the Eastern League's "Pitcher of the Week" award yesterday, saw his consecutive scorless innings streak end at 20 2/3 when a wild pitch plated a run for New Hampshire (19-17). DeSalvo worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th Inning and gave up five hits on the night. He walked four and struck out six.

After DeSalvo's work in the top of the fourth, the Thunder got their offense going in the bottom half of the inning against Fisher Cats starter Josh Banks. After a Kevin Thompson single, 2B Gabe Lopez doubled him home for a 1-0 lead. 1B Shelley Duncan followed two batters later with an RBI single for the second run. Brown capped the inning with a three-run homer for a 5-0 lead. Banks (4-2), who retired the first nine batters he faced, took the loss allowing five runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Thunder pitchers walked seven batters on the night, but the Fisher Cats missed their opportunities. New Hampshire left 12 runners on base and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Ben Julianel worked the final two innings to earn his first save of the season.

The series continues on Wednesday at 11:05 AM. Danny Borrell (1-0, 5.06) starts for Trenton against New Hampshire's Cam Reimers (3-3, 4.14).
