By Dan Loney
Trenton Thunder Director of Broadcasting

Trenton's Matt DeSalvo and Erie's Justin Verlander battled in a pitchers duel at Waterfront park on Thursday night, but it was Erie to score late in a 6-1 win over the Thunder.

The Thunder (54-50) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 4th Inning on a Shelley Duncan solo homer, his 26th of the year. It was the only run allowed by Verlander (2-0) on the night and his only run allowed in 29 2/3 innings so far with Erie. Verlander allowed just three hits over eight innings for the win with two walks and seven strikeouts. He retired the final nine batters that he faced.

DeSalvo got out of trouble in the 2nd Inning with a strikeout of Chris Maples and then fanned the next eight batters faced. He had 10 strikeouts on the night. Erie (55-49) tied the game in the 6th Inning on an RBI single by DH Kurt Airoso. DeSalvo allowed one run on three hits over six innings.

The SeaWolves took the lead with three unearned runs off Trenton reliever Carlos Artiles in the 8th Inning. With the bases loaded, C Max St. Pierre picked up an RBI on a groundout and then added two runs runs when a throw by Shelley Duncan to 3rd Base went into the Erie dugout. They added a two-run double from 1B Juan Tejeda in the 9th Inning for insurance. Artiles (3-2) took the loss charged with the three unearned runs on four hits.

The Thunder begin a series with Altoona on Friday at 7:05 PM. Steven White (0-2, 8.44) ERA starts for the Thunder against Altoona's Jason Roach (0-0, 0.00).
