(Norwich, CT)- Trenton and Connecticut split a doubleheader on Friday with the Thunder winning the opener, 7-3. The Defenders came back for a win in the nightcap by a 3-1 score.
Game #1 saw Trenton (10-17) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd Inning on a Gabe Lopez RBI single. They added three more runs off Connecticut starter Chris Begg in the 5th Inning, including a two-run homer by Vince Faison. The Defenders responded with a two-run homer by Nate Schierholtz in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Thunder put the game away with three runs in the 7th Inning, including a two-run double by DH Randy Ruiz. Begg (2-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) in 6 1/3 innings.
Tyler Clippard (1-4) picked up the win allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Charlie Manning, who entered the game with Trenton ahead 4-2, worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save.
The second game saw Trenton take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd Inning on a Shelley Duncan solo homer off Defenders starter Mike Musgrave, but that was his only run allowed in four innings of work. Connecticut (15-11) tied the game in the bottom of the second on a Brian Munhall solo homer off Trenton starter Jorge DePaula. DH Travis Ishikawa then delivered an RBI single in the 5th Inning for a 2-1 lead. SS Aaron Sisk added a solo homer in the 6th Inning for an insurance run.
DePaula (0-4) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings for the loss. He walked three and struck out two. The win went to Connecticut's Joe Bateman (3-1), who worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Billy Sadler added another 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his 3rd save.
The series continues on Saturday at 2:05 PM. LHP Danny Borrell (1-2, 4.15) starts for Trenton against Connecticut's Patrick Misch (2-0, 0.90).
