Sheffield, Hughes Help Thunder "Rock" New Britain

(New Britain, CT)- Kevin Howard and Omir Santos had two RBI apiece, while Phil Hughes earned his first Double-A win, as Trenton beat New Britain, 7-4, on Monday night. The win was the ninth in the last ten games for the Thunder.

N.Y. Yankees OF Gary Sheffield was also part of the win. He contributed a hit and a RBI on his one-day rehab assignment with the Thunder. Sheffield singled in the 1st Inning off Rock Cats' starter Adam Harben and then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd Inning. He was 1-for-3 on the night, being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 8th Inning.

Trenton (20-22) took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd Inning. They loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single before C Omir Santos singled home the first run. 2B Gabe Lopez added a run on a fielder's choice before Sheffield's sacrifice fly. New Britain (18-21) got two runs back off Hughes in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by 2B Felix Molina. Santos added another RBI single in the top of the third for a 4-2 lead, but the Rock Cats got a sacrifice fly from C Jose Morales for a 4-3 game in the bottom half.

The Thunder got a two-run double from Howard in the 4th Inning and an RBI single from RF Bronson Sardinha to claim a 7-4 lead in the 5th Inning. Hughes (1-1) retired his final seven batters of the game, going six innings for the win. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Harben (1-2) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. He walked five batters with one strikeout.

Charlie Manning and Justin Pope combined for three shutout innings of relief to close out the win. Pope worked a scoreless 9th Inning for his 4th save.

The teams play a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5:05 PM. Danny Borrell (1-2, 3.79) and Jeremy King (2-1, 3.32) start the "twin-bill" for Trenton against New Britain's Matt Garza (1-0, 0.00) and John Thomas (0-0, 2.00).
