Rutgers-Camden Volleyball Loses Tri-match to Rutgers-Newark, College of Notre Dame

CAMDEN - The Rutgers-Newark women’s volleyball team raised its record to 19-7 as it swept past Rutgers University-Camden and the College of Notre Dame in a tri-match here Saturday.

The Scarlet Raiders swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-10, 30-28, 30-20, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match to improve to 5-2 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark completed its day by sweeping the College of Notre Dame, 30-18, 30-28, 30-6.

In the third match of the day, the College of Notre Dame swept Rutgers-Camden, 30-28, 30-23, 30-19 to raise its record to 11-17.

Rutgers-Camden, which has lost eight straight matches, dips to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the NJAC.

In the opening match, Newark received 13 kills and nine digs from freshman outside hitter Katlyn Lewis (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) in its sweep over Rutgers-Camden. Junior middle hitter Julie Pape (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin Senior) added eight kills and four service aces, while freshman outside hitter Jesica Cockerham (Keller, TX/Fossil Ridge) had 11 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Nazly Hasanizadeh (Katy, TX/Alief Hastings) notched 19 assists for the Scarlet Raiders and senior libero Jessica Kleeman (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) notched 13 digs.

For Rutgers-Camden, freshman middle hitter Marci Polite (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and freshman outside hitter Heather Pohorely (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) each collected six kills, while sophomore setter Nikki Cosico (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) added 13 digs and freshman middle hitter Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) notched 11 digs and five assists. Junior outside hitter/setter Julie Grochowski (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) collected four kills, 13 assists, nine digs and two blocks. Freshman opposite Deanne Linen (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added two kills and eight digs.

In its win over Notre Dame, Newark received 10 kills apiece from Lewis and freshman middle hitter Rachel Guyt (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley). Hasanizadeh added 30 assists and 14 digs, while Lewis had 13 digs.

In their loss to Notre Dame, the Lady Raptors saw Pohorely notch seven kills and nine digs, while Cosico had 18 digs, Grochowski had 14 digs, 22 assists and four kills and Powell added two kills, nine assists, three aces and 12 digs. Polite had five kills, five aces, 10 digs and two blocks, while Linen added one kill, four digs and one block.

During the two matches, the Scarlet Raptors broke single-season program records, set in 2004, for kills (571) and assists (542). With their statistics Saturday, the 2006 team raised those single-season standards to 613 kills and 546 assists. They also tied the 2004 single-season club record of 225 service aces.

Rutgers-Camden travels to Jersey City Tuesday night to battle NJAC powerhouse New Jersey City University in a 7 p.m. match.
