The University of the Sciences turned up the defense in the second half as they won their eighth straight game, a 65-45 decision over Felician College in a CACC women’s basketball game in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Devils improve to 18-6 overall and 17-4 in league play. USP is also an impressive 10-1 in conference road games this season. Felician falls to 7-17 overall and 6-16 in league play.

USP placed four players in double figures led by senior captain Leah Shumoski (Sr., Marple Newtown HS/Broomall, PA). Shumoski scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. With her 20 points, Shumoski surpassed the 1,800 mark for career points, finishing the game with 1,803.

Joining Shumoski in double figures were Shelby Rance (Jr., Central Columbia HS/ Bloomsburg, PA), Allison Weiss (Fr., Springfield HS/Springfield, PA) and Rashanna Edwards (Jr., West Windsor-Plainsboro HS/ Cherry Hill, NJ). Rance finished the game with 15 points and a game-high four assists. Weiss recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Edwards added 12 points while dishing out three assists.

Danielle Norman led the Golden Falcons with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Trailing by one at the half, the Devils turned up the pressure in the final period, limiting Felician to just six field goals in the period and 16 total points. After Norman opened the period with as basket to put Felician up three, 31-28, the Devils went on a 13-1 run to take a nine-point lead, 41-32 at the 13:19 mark. Shumoski started things off with an up and over backdoor layup from Rance and Weiss followed with a pair of free throws. Shumoski added another layup, was fouled and made the free throw to complete the 3-point play and boost USP’s lead to six 37-31. After Suzanne Albert made one of two free throws, Edwards and Shumoski followed with jumpers to complete the run.

Felician’s Laurin Brown made a three-point field goal to pull the Golden Falcons within six, 41-35 at the 12:57 mark but this was as close as they would get as USP went on a 17-5 run to pull away and take a 58-40 lead with 4:04 left. Nine of the Devils' points came at the free throw line, including a pair of free throws by Rance when Felician Head Coach Jay Latko drew two technical fouls at the 10:39 mark and was ejected. Edwards, Shumoski and Autumn Tully (Fr., Union-Endicott HS/Endicott, NY) also had baskets during the run. Felician made just two of ten shots during the USP run.

A three-point play by Felician’s Katelyn Gardepe pulled the Golden Falcons within 15, 60-45 at the 3:32 mark but this was all they would score as USP finished the game scoring the last five points to make the final margin 20 points, 65-45.

The Devils connected on 23 of 50 shots from the field (46.0%) while Felician made just 18 of 61 (29.5%). The Devils held a big advantage on the free throw line, making 18 of 25 to just 7 of 10 for the Golden Falcons. The Devils held a slight advantage on the boards, 37-35 and committed 15 turnovers to Felician’s 18.

The Devils will play their final regular season road game this Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Bloomfield College. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m.
