Devils Sweep Molloy and Caldwell to even Record at 6-6

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's volleyball team recorded consecutive 3-0 wins over Molloy College and Caldwell College in a tri-match this afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena to even their record at 6-6 on the season.

In earning their fifth straight win, USP also improves to 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

Against Molloy, the Devils took game one 30-24; game two, 30-27 and game three 30-26. Kirsten Lechner (Fr., DePaul Catholic/ Wayne, N.J.) led the Devils with nine kills while Claire Tauschek (So., Middleton HS/Verona, Wis.) had 22 digs and four service aces. Tauschek's second ace of the match was the 100th of her career. She becomes just the fifth player in USP history to reach 100 career service aces.

Angela Barra paced Molloy with ten kills while Alicia Curci had eight digs.

In game one, the Devils jumped out to an early 12-9 lead after the first full service rotation. Molloy kept the game close but the Devils maintained a three point lead 22-19 after the second rotation. Molloy pulled within two, 26-24 before the Devils forced a sideout and Ladonna Landmesser (So., Archbishop Prendergast HS/Drexel Hill, Pa.) served out the game for the 30-24 win. Lechner and Andrea Cardine (Fr., Reading Central Catholic/ Temple, Pa.) each had four kills in the first game.

In game two, the Lady Lions held a 13-9 advantage after the first full service rotation. USP battled back to take a 20-17 lead with Lindsey Wenderoth (Jr., Owings Mills HS/Owings Mills, Md.) scoring six straight service points to turn a three-point deficit into a three point lead. Molloy battled back to take a 23-22 lead before the Devils forced a sideout to even things up at 23-all. Lechner followed with four straight service points to give the Devils a 27-23 lead. Both teams forced sideouts for the next five points making the score 29-26 before Molloy scored off their own serve to pull within two 29-27. USP then forced a sideout to take game two 30-27.

In the third and final game of the match, USP led 12-9 after the first rotation was completed and 22-21 after the second. The Lady Lions tied the game at 23-all and took a 25-24 lead before the Devils evened the score at 25-all with a sideout. Wenderoth then served four straight points to make the score 29-25 before Molloy forced a sideout to pull within three 29-26. With the Lady Lions serving, Tauschek took the service reception, passed to Landmesser who set Lechner for the match point kill.

The Devils returned later in the afternoon to take on Caldwell College, defeating the Cougars in three straight games, 30-13, 30-10 and 30-10.

Tauschek recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 digs and a career-high ten service aces. Wenderoth also recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while Megan Wolfe (So., Wausau Newman Catholic/Rothschild, Wis.) paced the Devils with 12 kills. Kayleen Pisczcek (Fr., Holy Name/Sinking Spring, Pa.) came off the bench to record 27 assists, all in the last two games of the match. Pisczcek also had four of the Devils' 22 service aces in the match. (One shy of the school record 23 set in 2004 vs. Felician)

Tauschek recorded six straight service points early in game one as the Devils jumped out to an 8-1 lead. USP expanded the margin to 18-8 by the completion of the first service rotation and led 26-13 before Wolfe served out the game. Wolfe led the balanced USP attack with four kills in game one. Wenderoth, Michelle Hogga (Sr., St. Pius X HS/Linfield, Pa.) and Lechner added three kills apiece.

Cardine staked the Devils to a 7-0 lead to open game two as the Devils continued to dominate. Pisczcek, serving for the first time in her first collegiate match, recorded nine straight service points as the Devils opened a 23-5 lead en route to the 30-10 win.

In game three, the Cougars kept things close, trailing 8-6 before Wolfe served five straight points to give the Devils a 14-6 lead. USP increased their lead to 20-9 before Tauschek recorded her final two aces of the match within a run of eight straight service points to boost the lead to 28-9. Wenderoth served the final point of the match as the Devils completed the sweep with a 30-10 win. Wolfe had six of her game-high 12 kills in the third game.

USP will take on defending CACC champion Goldey Beacom College on Tuesday, September 27, 2006 at the Bobby Morgan Arena. Tip off time is 7 p.m.
