Cougars Blast Eleven Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Devils

Adric Saxon hit three consecutive home runs in his first three at-bats of the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with the University of Sciences Friday night at Smith Field. Saxon helped the Cougars hit 11 homers on the day en route a sweep of the Devils to two victories, 13-6 and 16-3.

The wins improve Caldwell's record 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Devils drop to 3-17 overall and 1-6 in CACC game. The Cougars are ranked #10 in this weeks NCBWA poll.

Justin DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.) went 3-for-5 while Rich Cipoletti (Sr., Half Hollow Hills West HS/Dix Hills, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 in the opener. Phil Maher (Jr., Norristown HS/Norristown, Pa.), Justin DeVincenzo, Michael DeVincenzo (Sr., Bishop Hoban HS/Plains, Pa.) and Phil Cox (So., Riverside HS/ Riverton, N.J.) each had an RBI for the Devils. Maher took the loss, pitching six innings while giving up all 13 runs.

The Cougars belted 20 hits off of the Devils in the opener, including solo home runs by Chris Chiarappa, Jorge Torres and Billy Ryan to lead off the third, fourth and sixth innings, respectively. The Cougars' big inning came in the bottom of the second, when Caldwell scored six runs and had seven hits to take a 6-1 lead. Chiarappa, Doug Hilgenberg, Andrew Robertson and Tommy Murphy each knocked in a run, while Saxon hit a two-run single in the inning.

Ryan went 4 for 4 with three runs, two RBI's and a homer. Torres drove in three runs while Murphy finished with three hits, including a double, and Raymond Keelan hit two doubles. Stephen Pfeil improved to 3-2 after striking out nine while giving up eight hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks.

Michael DeVincenzo had a solo home run in the second before the Cougars struck for their big inning, scoring six times in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead. One-out singles by Chris Pino (Jr., Hazleton Area HS/West Hazleton, Pa.) and Cipoletti led to the second USP run as Maher drove home Pino with an RBI groundout.

The Cougars increased their lead to 13-2 before the Devils scored again, getting three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to make the final score 13-6.

The Devils had just seven hits in the nightcap while the Cougars banged out 17, including eight home runs and a double. Justin DeVincenzo had two hits while Pino, Michael DeVincenzo, Mark Forbes (Fr., Salesianum HS/Hockessin, Del.), Michael Kleinschmidt (So., St. Mark's HS/Newark, Del.) and Brian Scott (So., Cornwall Central HS/Cornwall, N.Y.) each had one. Justin DeVincenzo took the loss in his first pitching appearance of the season.

USP opened the second game with a pair of runs in the top of the first, scoring their first run on a throwing error and their second run on a double by Michael DeVincenzo. Saxon answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. A single by Jon Irwin in the bottom of the second scored Ryan to tie the game at 2-2. Then in his second at-bat of the game, Saxon gave Caldwell the lead for good with a blast to left field in the bottom of the third. Ryan and Keelan led off the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back home runs, with Ryan Glasco belting a three-run homer to put Caldwell ahead 8-2.

The Cougars added six more runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh as Saxon hit his third home run of the game in the sixth and Michael O'Hara hitting a home run in the seventh. Justin Devincenzo's RBI double in the top of the eighth completed the scoring. Robert Casal pitched six innings for the Cougars, allowing five hits and two runs while fanning six to improve to 5-1 on the season.
