South Jersey Youth Football:
Spotlight on the Minutemen (Unlimited Division)

Wednesday, August 20, 2003

By John Marcucci
SJSports Special Correspondent

A team to watch, the Washington Twp. "Minutemen" had their first scrimmage against the West Deptford "Eagles". Under the controlled supervision of the coaches at the River Winds Sports Complex, the Minutemen exploded on the first play of the game for a 40 yard touch down run by Keith Schrump. Also adding spice to the backfield is newcomer Vincent Marcucci, whose speed and versatility as running back, quarterback and free safety should be an asset for the Minutemen.

Spearheading the attack against the Eagles was quarterback back Kyle Nolan, who also doubles as a defensive back. Kyle's hand offs to full back Anthony Astorga were right on the money. Astorga is a veteran to the league; his ability to carry the ball and a few of the defense should prove to be beneficial for the Minutemen.

Lets not forget the offensive and defensive lines. To name a few, Denny McGrail is one of the best centers in the league. Matt Bruno who also doubles as middle linebacker, will be seeing plenty of playing time. Matt is a hard-hitting player who had some key tackles against the Eagles to stop the run.

The rest of the team, Curt Abrams, Neil Bonner, Adam DeBes, Max Giorgi, Dan Hearn, Alex Lawson, Fran Maxwell, Timmy McDonald, Ed McGuire, Remel McInnis, Craig Robinson, Tajh Rogers, Mike Shemansky, have the ability to aid the Minutemen to a winning season.

Behind the scene are the coaches, who contribute a lot of time and effort into the team and township sports. Head coach Anthony Astorga is aided by his assistants John Dunbar, Pat Healy, Leon Pirillo and Denny McGrail, all are dedicated men in whom all have the same goals, mainly to teach and prepare these young boys for competition and upcoming sports at the High School level. Also, to recognize hidden talents and bring them to a peak. Let's not forget achieving a winning season for the Minutemen.

In any event, it should be an exciting and interesting season for the Minutemen. Next scheduled game, Saturday Aug. 23 (Mayors Cup scrimmage) at Washington Twp. Football complex "Minutemen" vs. "Patriots".
