Saturday, April 15, 2006

By Stu Franklin

So far this season, the high school baseball season has seen its share of upsets leaving those who follow the game wondering if every game will be a difficult one. The good teams will easily put a loss behind them and take the season one game at a time. Others may find it hard to shake off a disappointing loss. In a non-league game played at Cherry Hill West, the visiting Blue Devils from Burlington had a couple of one run games that didn't go their way and the other that did. With their 7-4 victory over the Lions, Cherry Hill West evened their record to three wins and three losses.

Tuesday, March 7, 2006

By Vincent Lewis

Even before the opening tip-off took place, this South Jersey Group I title game between the top seeded Lancers from LEAP Academy and the second seeded Blue Devils from Burlington City was a match-up and a test both teams were ready to take on. Burlington City features a guard oriented offense that anyone of them could take control of a game. The Lancers has the convenience of deep bench with players being inserted into the game without losing anything on the court. With the Lancers holding onto a one point lead heading into the final quarter, LEAP Academy would win the battle of the boards with their height and post a 90-83 victory and capture their first title in their brief school year’s history.

It was a challenge third seeded Burlington City was ready to take on. The Blue Devils had the honor to travel to the second seeded Rams from Riverside participating in the semifinals of the S.J. Group 1 bracket. Both teams had players who they have depended on all season long and those players would step up their game in order to advance to the finals. Riverside's David Laury was dominating on the boards and gave the Blue Devils problems all game long. His game high 39 points would not be enough as Mike Morris and Kareem Diggs came up big down during the final quarter. Burlington City would finally pull away from Riverside and post a 73-68 victory over the Rams.

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

By Jerome Michaels

It was a tale of two halves for the division leading Blue Devils from Burlington City. In a Burlington County League Patriot Division basketball game against Cinnaminson, it had appeared as if the Pirates were ready to do all they could to upset the leaders of their division. Knowing the cutoff date to qualify for the upcoming state tournament was less that a week away, Cinnaminson aggressive defense kept them right in this game up until halftime. But Burlington City pulled themselves together behind the success of Mike Morris and took over the second half. The Blue Devils remained undefeated in their division with their 58-45 victory over the Pirates.

Haddonfield's Second Half Defense Pushes City Aside

Friday, December 30, 2005

By Jerome Michaels

The last game on the schedule of the Jameer Nelson Classic boy's basketball tournament held at Cherry Hill East High School would put the talented Burlington City team against the Bulldogs from Haddonfield. The Bulldogs arguably have been labeled as the best team in South Jersey, feature the 7-2 senior center Brian Zoubek. Opposing teams' game play would be to challenge the dominating center inside or find the open shot on the perimeter. The Blue Devils would be successful during the first half, but Haddonfield's the second half defense allowed them to pull away and post a 76-54 decision and capture the Nelson Classic title.
