Justin Kinniry had two goals and Matt Maugeri added a goal and an assist as Cherokee defeated Shawnee 6-3 in Tier 1 action on Monday night. It was Shawnee’s first loss after seven straight wins and they had also given up the least amount of goals, 12, coming into the game. Cherokee jumped on top early as Kinniry scored in the opening minute and after adding a power play goal Cherokee seemed to be in control. But Shawnee would score the next three goals to take a brief 3-2 lead.

Ryan Welsey scored two power play goals seconds apart as Cherokee was down two men, and just like that we were tied at 2-2. After Matt McDonald put Shawnee ahead 3-2 late in the first period, Maugeri tied the game at 3-3 early in the second period as he picked up a loose puck and blasted home a shot. Kinniry scored the eventual game winner as he came right up the slot and beat Paul Grey for a 4-3 advantage. Kyle Kovervas scored a power play goal to end the second period at 5-3. CJ Lotierzo‘s blast from the point on a feed from Frank Garvey put Shawnee away at 6-3.
