High School Girls Basketball: Saturday, January 16, 1999
By Art Redd Teams go through their practice drills preparing themselves for game time situations. Take for instance, free throws, which proved to be the difference in Saturday's non-league girl's basketball game. Cherry Hill East hosted a very talented Willingboro team and converted 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to get past their opponent. The Lady Cougars were able to pull away and defeat Willingboro 45-36. This game started out with both teams getting a slow start. Cherry Hill East clinged to an 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Willingboro began to work hard on the boards and they were rewarded with second chance baskets. The Chimeras battled their way to their first lead of the game 11-10 with 3:53 remaining in the half. Each team traded final buckets and ended the half finding Willingboro up 13-12. The third quarter was a tight one as both teams came out from the half with different ways to prevent their opponents from scoring. East began to use Joy Pela a bit more to some success. Her height was able to create turnovers and score points. Laura Baron scored five straight points in the third, including a 3 pointer, to give East a 21-16 lead. Willingboro continued to move the ball around to the open player for a clear shot and converged on the basket if there was a missed shot. That, along with their full court press found the Lady Chimeras down only three going into the final quarter. Willingboro started the final quarter with a basket by Sherri Brown to pull within one. That's when East found a way to get through Willingboro's full court press by sending a player long for the easy basket. Pela received one of those passes to put East up 29-26 with 5:49 remaining in the game. As the quarter ticked down to the five minute mark, East went into the bonus and used the free throw line to pull away from Willingboro. East enjoyed their largest lead of the game, 39-27 with just under two minutes left. Lindsey Tjiatias had a game high 16 points; Lara Baron and Joy Pela each had 10 for Cherry Hill East. Sherri Brown had a team high 15 points for Willingboro. Photos by Art Redd
