High School Softball:
Deptford Relies On Ayres and Delivers

It's not uncommon to see a starting pitcher complete one game and then find that same pitcher staying on the mound to pitch yet another game on the same day. This past weekend in the Overbrook tournament, Nicole Ayres pitched twice and picked up two completed game wins for the Lady Spartans from Deptford against Pennsville and Eastern and she was not done. Starting in a Tri-County Conference Royal Division match-up against Cumberland, Ayres pitched recorded twelve strikeouts and Jackie Brown collected four hits helping the Spartans to a 17-0 win over the Colts.

The Spartans were looking to rebound from a 2-0 loss to Clearview on Monday. Sending every starter up to bat during the bottom of the first inning, Deptford sprung out to a 6-0 lead. Deptford’s lead expanded to 15-0 after three innings and so did Ayres’ strikeout total. Nine strikeout through three innings was more than enough to pick up thief fifth divisional win for Deptford. That’s one win they recorded the entire season last year and there were plenty more to come.
