Vikings' Lindsay Roy Scores For Varsity

Lindsay Roy became the first female to score a goal for the Eastern Vikings varsity squad as they skated by Holy Cross 8-0 in a SJHSIHL game played on Monday night at Pennsauken. For most of you not familiar with Lindsay, a senior, she skates with the Eastern JV team. As most coaches will try and do, any seniors that are on the JV squad that have not dressed for a varsity game, schedule permitting, will play a varsity game before they graduate.

Coach Pontonio could not have scripted it any better, as not only did Lindsay score her first goal (she has one assist with the JV team) but also her brother Adam got the assist. Eastern also welcomed back Mike Cianfrani who has been out with a shoulder injury, and he led the Vikings with two goals and three assists. Eastern came out flying and dominated in shots thirty-seven to eight and also started Kyle Bradshaw in nets, his first varsity start and a shut-out. John Schellenhammer gave the Vikings the 1-0 lead scoring an unassisted goal, and minutes later Adam Esfahani made it 2-0 with Schellenhammer and Marc Manara assisting.

Cianfrani scored his first of two goals to put Eastern up 3-0 after one period. Then with three minutes left in the second period, Lindsay scored and the whole bench erupted. Fueled by this emotion, the Vikings scored two more goals in seventeen seconds, one by Joe Jurkofsky and the other by Warrington to make it 6-0 after two periods. Cianfrani and Jurkofsky notched the last two goals for Eastern and the 8-0 final. Congratulations to Lindsay Roy for not only scoring but also having the courage and desire to play with guys twice her size. Also hats off to Coach Pontonio for giving her the opportunity.
