High School Ice Hockey: Eastern Vikings are Kings in Spring Thursday, July 11, 2002 By Mike Costantino SJSports Staff Writer Hockey in warm weather? Are you kidding me? Well hockey is one sport that is played almost year round, from house leagues to travel teams to league play. At the Flyers Skate Zone the Eastern Vikings won this years' edition of the Spring Varsity League despite starting slowly. With head coach Mike Pontonio watching from the sidelines, assistant Steve Rumbos runs the team, along with assistance from former NHL defenseman Wayne Gibbs. Coaching mostly sophomores, this should only help the Vikings as they look to improve on last years season in the SJHSIHL. Congratulations to Coach Rumbos and Coach Gibbs as they now has given Coach Pontonio a team that has tasted success.
