The Edgewood Eagles (7-5) upset highly ranked Shawnee (11-4) in an Olympic Conference softball game by the score of 2-0. The weather was great for softball, sunny, light breeze, and warm. The game was scoreless and saw a pitching duel between Edgewood's Switenko and Shawnee's Basenfelder until the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles sent up Katie Wilhelm, who hit a single. The next batter was Allison Green, who laid down a bunt. Wilhelm was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice. With Green on first, Edgewood's Coach Fonte signaled for the next batter, Diana Hendffer, to try to sacrifice Green to second. Hendffer laid down a bunt, and all runners were safe on an error by the third baseplayer. Edgewood's next batter, Lindsay Creaney, tried to move the runners but was called out on strikes. With two outs and two on, Edgewood's Alexis Switenko stepped into the box. With the count 1-1, Switenko hit a fly ball to short center field. The ball was dropped as Edgewood took the lead on 2 errors in the inning. Switenko knocked in the winning run, as Green crossed home plate. Kristen Wolf, with the count 1-1, knocked in Hendffer, the insurance run, with a single to left center. On the throw to home, both Switenko and Wolf moved up a base to third and second. The two runs gave Edgewood a 2-0 lead.

Those were all the runs that Edgewood needed, as Switenko struck out a total of 7 batters on the day. Edgewood capitalized on the errors made by Shawnee, as they made 4 errors in the game. Shawnee did not capitalize on the 3 errors made by Edgewood. Edgewood only had three hits on the day and Shawnee pitchers had 4 strikeouts.

Edgewood High School pitcher Alexis Switenko pitched 3 shut outs this week as the Edgewood Eagles Softball team went 3-0. On Monday she shut out Triton, Tuesday Shawnee, and on Thursday Paul VI. Also on Thursday, Alexis pichted her 2nd no-hitter of the year and now has over 110 strike outs for the year.
