EHT Tournament Will Start Hoop Season With 11 Games

PRESS RELEASE

Some of the most successful basketball programs in South Jersey, including five defending South Jersey champions, are in the field for the 2nd annual Prime Events Tipoff Weekend at Egg Harbor Township High School. The boy-girl event will be held from December 17-19.

Leading the way is St. Augustine Prep, which won the state Parochial B boys title in March and has won three straight South Jersey championships. The Prep will face another three-time South Jersey champion - Rancocas Valley in Group 4 - during Saturday's Tipoff finale.

There will be 11 games played during the three-day Tipoff Weekend, which pairs top Cape-Atlantic League teams against some of the finest teams in New Jersey.

The other South Jersey champions in the field include the Ocean City boys and both teams from Sterling. Ocean City, the South Jersey Group 3 champions, will meet Pemberton, coached by Roy Heck, who once coached rival Mainland. The Sterling girls, Group 2 state finalists, will face Holy Spirit and the Sterling boys, led by highly-rated junior Ernest Turner, will meet Middle Township, which lost a thriller to Ocean City in last year's South Jersey Group 3 final.

Tipoff Weekend will start on Dec. 17, the first night of high school basketball in New Jersey, when host Egg Harbor Township will play the traditional girl-boy doubleheader that opens the event - the girls against Clearview and the boys against Triton.

Saturday will start when the Bridgeton girls, with two outstanding players (Cyndi Wilks and Keisha Brown) back after knee surgery, take on Rancocas Valley. After the Holy Spirit-Sterling girls game, Atlantic City's boys will meet Neptune, always one of New Jersey's finest teams, at 3:30. Wildwood Catholic's girls will go against talented Bishop Eustace in a 5:15 girls game with the St. Augustine-Rancocas Valley boys showdown wrapping up the five-game Saturday lineup.

Sunday will start with Absegami, the overall CAL girls champions last year, facing powerful Gloucester Catholic. After the Ocean City-Pemberton game, two of South Jersey's most successful coaches will enjoy a rare meeting when Ken Leary's Pleasantville Greyhounds take on Paul Collins' Willingboro Chimeras at 4pm. Sunday will conclude with Middle meeting Sterling.

Tipoff Weekend was created and is directed by Prime Events, which also created The Girls Basketball Shootout, scheduled to be held in February for the fifth straight year.
