Haddonfield Repeats as S.J. Group II Champs

The Bulldogs from Haddonfield High School continued their dominance by defeating their nearest opponent in the South Jersey Group II tournament. The second seeded Silver Knights from Sterling were looking to end Haddonfield’s twenty-three game winning streak during this championship game. The Bulldogs would continue to use a team effort in breaking down Sterling’s defense late in the second quarter and put the game out of each during the third. Haddonfield had five players score in double figures which led to 80-57 victory.

Haddonfield has been ranked as the number one or two for at least the past five years. Four of the five past years the Bulldogs were the top seed and finally captured our area’s group title last year. During that game, Middle Township had defeated Sterling before losing to Haddonfield by the narrowest of margin. Two years ago, Middle Township was that team who defeated the number one seed and eventually captured the title. This year had a different result as Haddonfield rolled past them by ten points.

This game Haddonfield was now focusing on the Knights as they were the team advancing to the finals but found out that the Bulldogs were able to find a way to score against the man-to-man defense. With a majority focus on Haddonfield’s Brian Zoubek, the guard’s play was the reason the Bulldogs broke open a close game starting at the beginning of the second quarter. Haddonfield led at the half 38-28 and then outscored Sterling by ten points during the third quarter to put this game away. Brian Zoubek led Haddonfield with a game high 22 points, Derek Heckendorn was not far behind with 21 points, Blake Wilson dropped in 11 and both Robert Williams and Joey Malcarney each finished the game with 10 points. Sterling was led by Art Ellis’ team high 20 points and Matt Sosna added 11 points and so did Drew Slickmeyer.
