By Gary Steiner
Unseasonably hot weather greeted the Lady Greyhounds of Northern Burlington as they visited the Lady Lancers of Holy Cross. The Lady Greyhounds (2-3) were struggling in their first year of lacrosse play, and were hoping to show some improvement against the 3-2 Lady Lancers. The heat took its toll on both teams, but it was the hot play of Kelly Wolverton and Kristin Zucconi that led Holy Cross to an 11-5 victory.
Kelly Wolverton struck first for Holy Cross, bouncing one in at the 23:32 mark. Three minutes later, Alex Vretto scored her first for the Lady Greyhounds. Holy Cross would score the next two, first one from Paige Kirlin followed by another bounced shot from Wolverton. Then Erin Sensbach pulled the Lady Greyhounds back within one at 14:07 with a backhand around the side of the goal. The heat was starting to take its toll as play slowed down, the next goal not coming for another six minutes when Wolverton scored her third of the game. Kristin Zucconi closed out the half with her first of the game by threading the needle between three defenders to put the Lady Lancers up 5-2.
Northern Burlington opened the second half with Vretto's second of the game, then Holy Cross keeping the lead at three with another from Zucconi. Kristyna Patsey bounced a shot through to pull the Lady Greyhounds back to within two. But Zucconi would add some heat to the field as she scored twice within 30 seconds and the Lady Lancers never looked back. Holy Cross ended the game with three unanswered goals in the last seven minutes to put the icing on the game.
The contest ended just in time as dark clouds approached with flash of lightning and a rumble of thunder.
