Vineland Hands Holy Cross Their First Loss of Season

The Michael Dengler Tournament was held at Florence this year and the undefeated Lancers from Holy Cross was the team most focused on to see if they would extend their streak to twenty-two games without a loss. An impressive come from behind win yesterday over Florence advanced the Lancers into the finals against the Fighting Clan from Vineland. It would be a rematch from last year and Vineland was looking to defeat the defending champs of this tournament. John Vasquez took the responsibility of trying to slow down the high powered Lancers and was successful. Vineland’s two run second inning were all the runs Vasquez needed as Vineland would had Holy Cross their first loss of the season by posting a 7-0 victory.

Holy Cross has an impressive baseball resume to go along with their winning streak this season. Defending Burlington County Liberty Division and South Jersey Parochial A champions, the Fighting Clan would seem to have their hands full. Vineland could also add defending champs to their resume as they earned the seventh seed in last year’s Group IV playoffs as Cape-Atlantic Conference American Division I champs. Their journey would end in the finals against the number one seed, but they had proven that they could win the big games.

Vasquez was able to pitch his way out of a first inning threat by Holy Cross. His effort gave Vineland a chance to get the first runs of the game and they did during scoring twice during the second inning. As the game went on, Vineland had to know that no lead was safe especially against a team that has been know to score runs in bunches. But on this day, Vineland would be the only team crossing home plate as they would score two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and a two more in the sixth finalized the scoring in this game.
