High School Wrestling: Friday, January 29, 1999
By Vincent Lewis Jr. It couldn't have been scripted any better when two very good wrestling teams go against one another. With each team getting their share of pins and decisions, this match was decided by the final bout. The Eastern Vikings (7-3) upset the Lenape Indians (9-1) by getting a pin by Mike Davidowich to defeat their opponent 27-26. This was a classic example of a team not giving up to score the come from behind victory. Lenape got off to an excellent start when they got a pin by Kurt Minuto. Next, Eastern got three straight victories ending with Jordan Hicks 9-7 decision over Lenape's Mark Minuto in the 125-pound bout. But Lenape got five straight victories of their own ending with Mike Ceroli scoring a decision over Eastern's Andrew Dawson. Now with Lenape holding a 23-12 edge, the Vikings began their comeback. After Tony Rahil and John McAvory won their bouts, Eastern was now only five points behind Lenape. The Indian's Brett Sanderlin expanded their lead with a decision in the 189-pound bout. So Greg Wrenn set the table for a dramatic comeback when he scored an 11-4 decision over Lenape's Frank Ewing. Both teams were now in a position for the victory, Davidowich needed a pin for any hopes of defeating the powerhouse Lenape Indians. He got that pin which ignited the Viking fans when he defeated Sangram Singh with 1:11 remaining in the heavyweight bout. Photos by Art Redd
