Germantown Academy edged Lenape 7-6 in a first round game of the 20th Annual Flyers Cup tournament played at Hollydell on Tuesday night. Nate Meyers scored four goals to pace Germantown Academy and was the most dominant player on the ice. Jeff Bagnoli led Lenape, also scoring four goals with Rick Salvador, who figured in on all the goals as he had two goals and four assists.

Having just come off a gut wrenching loss in the SJHSIHL championship series, the Borgos brothers had their team prepared to play a perennial powerhouse in Germantown Academy. Salvador gave them the 1-0 lead with just over four minutes played in the first period on a feed from Dan Whitlock. Meyers tied the game on the power play at 1-1 with the assist to Matt Jubelirer. Less than a minute later, the same combination hooked up again as Meyers scored to give the Patriots the 2-1 lead and Jubelirer assisting.

Bagnoli tied the score at 2-2 with Jerry Reed and Salvador assisting but thirty seconds later John Millinghausen would give Germantown Academy the 3-2 lead heading into the second period. Meyers scored in the first 16 seconds to give the Patriots a two goal lead at 4-2. Bagnoli would score the next two goals to tie the score for the Indians at 4-4 with Salvador assisting.

Again it was the end of the period that would do in Lenape, as Meyers and Steve Ciottoni would score in the last minute to restore the two goal lead for the Patriots at 6-4 heading into the third period. When Meyers scored his fourth of the game early in the third Germantown Academy led 7-4, but Bagnoli and Salvador would score to bring Lenape to within 7-6 with just over two minutes left. However, Lenape just ran out of time and Germantown Academy would live to play another day, moving on to the next round of the tournament.
