Lenape goalie John Hood stopped 31 shots and withstood an Eastern power play in the final minutes as Lenape skated to a 2-2 tie with Eastern on Monday night in Voorhees. It was the third straight tie for Lenape, after last week’s ties with Clearview and Cinnaminson. After a scoreless first period, Lenape scored twice in just over a minute. Jim Sauerbaum converted a pass from Alex Shaffer early in the period and then on the power play Frank Wittman made it 2-0 with the assists going to Matt Bozman and Brad Reed.

Midway through the period Derrick Schemmel hit Torin Lawson with a pass at center ice and he broke in all alone and his quick wrist shot found the net and cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the third period. Eastern controlled the play for most of the period, but Hood faced down every shot. Finally, with just over six minutes to play it was the same combination that scored the first Eastern goal, Schemmel to Lawson that tied the game at 2-2. Lenape could not generate much offense as they only had one shot on nets. With a chance to win the game in the final minutes on the power play, Hood made several big saves including stoning Dan Drazen from in close to preserve the tie for Lenape.

Notes: League president and Eastern coach Mike Pontonio confirmed that next year the tier system would return, good news for all fans that enjoy competitive games.
