High School Girls Lacrosse:
Déjà Vu As Moorestown Continues Streak With Win Over Shawnee

The last time Moorestown and Shawnee met on a lacrosse field it was for the state championship last June 9, where the Lady Quakers dominated in a 12-2 win. On Wednesday, Shawnee opened their 2002 season with an 18-0 blowout of Pennsauken, and were definitely looking to try out their stuff against their arch-rivals. Snow flurries suprised the fans in some strange April weather, but there was nothing strange about the play on the field as the Lady Quakers showed they were ready to make another run at the state title with a convincing 11-5 win over the Lady Renegades.

Shawnee showed that they came to play when Annie Marchitello bounced one in to score first at 22:02. They continued to pressure, as Jenna Tursi scored their second goal on a pass from Stephanie Janice at 19:08. But Moorestown was unaffected by this early setback. The momentum shifted when Kelley Putnam scored at the 16:31 mark on a pass from Ally Zeitz. The Lady Quakers then proceeded to run off seven more unanswered goals. Shawnee did not score again until Marchitello put in her second of the game at 21:43 in the second half.

Early in the second half, down 8-2, Shawnee Coach Rudderow elected to switch goalies. But by then the damage had been done. Moorestown goalie Jackie Kushner had been catching everything but the kitchen sink, and showed what a difference a great goalie can make. After Shawnee scored three unanswered goals, Moorestown's Coach Knobloch called a timeout, which seemed to do the trick as the Lady Quakers ended the game with three unanswered goals of their own.

Moorestown's unbeaten streak now stands at 46 games. Shawnee will most likely get another chance to end that streak when these two teams meet again in the playoffs.
