Haddon Township Captures S.J. Group 2 Title

The road to the group finals would have been a Cinderella story for either of these two teams. For Haddon Township and Overbrook, neither one of these teams were supposed to have advanced past the higher seeds to participate in the group finals, let alone win it. This year’s run at the South Jersey Group 2 softball title proves that no matter what your regular season record may be, qualifying for the tournaments gives a team one chance at being the best. Haddon Township’s late lead was erased by the Lady Rams to send this championship game into extra innings. It would take a two out hit by Brianne Moore during the bottom of the ninth inning to give Haddon Township the 3-2 victory and the group title.

The sixth ranked Lady Hawks seem to have gotten used to staying calm no matter if they have the lead in a game or find themselves trailing. Recently, Haddon Township was that team rallying from a deficit to battle back for the come-from-behind win. The Lady Rams from Overbrook would be put into that category as well. The Rams easily advance from their opening round win and knocked off the top seed in the Group 2 bracket. Facing their next challenge, the fourth seed also fell victim to Overbrook’s success at coming away with the one run victory. Today’s game would not be any difference as one run would decide the winner.

Both teams ran into a bit of trouble trying to get that first and important run of the game. During the bottom of the third inning, Haddon Township would strike first with a single run and then another run during the sixth inning. Overbrook would finally respond during the top of the seventh scoring twice and sent this game into extra innings. Neither team was able to rally during the eight inning, but it would be the ninth that started the celebrations. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Moore’s hit would start the celebrations for the Lady Hawks.
