Booth's Trick A Real Treat For Paul VI

Zak Booth had a hat trick as Paul VI defeated Cherry Hill East 5-3 in Tier 1 action in Voorhees. After a scoreless first period, thanks in a large part to the play of Eric Lake in goal for Paul VI, East controlled the games first three minutes peppering Lake with six consecutive shots. East finally broke through midway in the second period. Vaks was able to beat Lake with a quick shot in the slot and a 1-0 lead for Cherry Hill. Moments later Booth would tie the game at 1-1 when Rich Ferro kept the puck alive in the corner. Peter Antinore skated out and found Booth in the slot and he re-directed the pass into the net. Twenty seconds later Booth struck again as he skated down the left side and his shot seem to deflect off a defenseman’s skate and into the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Brandon Rowan scored late in the period to put Paul VI up 3-1 and as we began the third period with Paul VI on the power play with a chance to increase their lead, it was East responding as Louis Stommel broke in all alone and slid the puck under Lake to cut the lead to 3-2. Paul VI has had a tendency in their short existence to let leads slip away, but this team against a good Cherry Hill team they responded. Booth skated down the left side and using the defenseman as a screen went short side with about five minutes remaining to make it 4-2. Then with some nice work in the corner by Brett Balco, he screened off the defenseman and then fed the puck to Mike DiGennaro in the slot who wasted little time in finding the net for a 5-2 lead. A late goal by Reed Hlavanka made the final 5-3, but Paul VI should build on this win against a quality opponent.
