Aaron Smith scored four goals and brother Ryan chipped in with four assists as Rancocas Valley defeated Timber Creek 9-2 in high school ice hockey played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. The opening period featured a wide-open style as both teams generated numerous scoring opportunities and combined to score seven goals. Smith scored the games first two goals in the first two minutes both on passes from Ryan. After Timber Creek’s Dan Visco cut the lead to 2-1 on a nice pass from Gary Scott Jr., Justin Nusspickel responded thirty seconds later for Rancocas finishing off a pass from Aaron Smith and the lead was 3-1.

Timber Creek still looking for their first win, continued their strong play in the period and got to within 3-2 as defenseman Nick Rehrig scored his first goal of the season. However goals by Kyle Sander and Robert Brown in the closing moments of the period put Rancocas up 5-2. Early in the second period Timber Creek had a golden opportunity to climb back into the game, they had a two-man advantage for a full two minutes, but failed to capitalize. Rancocas scored the only goal of the period as Aaron Smith got his third on a great pass from Sean Mellon. Matt Sansoni scored twice in the third period and Aaron added his fourth to complete the 9-2 win.

Notes: Kudos to Rancocas coaches for demanding that the players work on passing the puck on a power play with a seven goal lead instead of trying to score. Why can’t more coaches instruct their players this way instead of trying to pat your stats?
