Washington Township edged Clearview 3-2 on Friday night in front of another standing room only crowd at Hollydell. With the win, Township took over first place and can clinch the division by beating Eastern next Friday. Prior to the game Coach Harrington said, "I believe our team is ready, they know what's at stake, and utilizing three lines we can use our speed to create opportunities."
Township took the lead at the eleven-minute mark as Chris Harrington did his best impersonation of Bobby Orr, rushing from end-to-end and beating Jared Weisenbach. It was 1-0 with Joe Gori and Joe Pelle assisting. That would be the only goal of the period, with Township controlling the play as they out-shot Clearview 16-5, but Weisenbach was solid in nets. Clearview's best scoring chance came at the three-minute mark when Pat Sullivan broke in alone but was stoned by Derek Lucas.
Clearview tied the game early in the second period, as Mike Gooch intercepted an ill-advised cross-ice pass and beat Lucas and we were all even at 1-1. On the ensuing face-off, Gooch scored again on a nice feed from Gunnar Fox and despite being out shot and out played, Clearview led 2-1.
With Clearview on the power play with about six minutes left in the period, Township's Buddy Andersen dumped the puck in the Clearview zone. As luck would have it, the puck deflected off a Clearview player and into the net. Suddenly we were tied at 2-2. With the teams skating four a side late in the period, Andersen skated in and put a back-hander by Weisenbach and Township had the lead at 3-2.
In the third period Clearview could only muster two shots on goal and never really threatened. It should be noted that both teams were missing key players, Rob Coble and John Meenan from Clearview and Derek Poletis from Township.
