Late Goal by Miller Helps West Deptford Defeat Lenape

Brad Miller scored with six minutes left in the game to snap a 4-4 tie and give West Deptford a 5-4 win in game 1 of the Tier 2 championship. Game 2 is Wednesday night at Skate Zone in Voorhees. Brandon Jackmuff led West Deptford with two goals and an assist; Tom Lizzio paced the Lenape attack with two goals. After Brett Gibbs scored just over a minute into the game on a shot that seemed to handcuff Lenape goalie Jason Herbert, Chris Sullivan tied the score at 1-1 jamming home a rebound of a shot by Kurt Schnepf.

Jackmuff gave West Deptford a 2-1 lead thirty seconds later as he crossed the blue line and his slap shot found its way into the net. Brad Clifford scored a breakaway goal early in the second period to increase the West Deptford lead to 3-1. But Lizzio on a nice pass from behind the net by Mike Amato cut the deficit to 3-2 late in the period and then after winning the opening face-off, Lizzio smoked one from the slot and we were tied at 3-3.

As has happened in most close games for West Deptford, Jackmuff usually takes over and makes something happen. He did just that as he skated through three defenders and his back-hander put his team up 4-3. But Lenape responded on the power play as Chris Fluder converted with Bob Reed and Sullivan assisting and once again we were tied at 4-4. The game-winning goal came when Ray Clifford picked off a clearing pass and found Miller all alone in front. Miller would have enough time to move the puck to his forehand and beat Herbert. Lenape pulled the goalie in the waning seconds but never came close to scoring.
