The Gladiator Bantam Elite AA hockey team from Voorhees, New Jersey beat the Quakers hockey team 3-1 in the first game of the Atlantic District finals. The teams face each other again on Saturday to continue the best of 3 game series. The winner of the series will advance to the National Championship in Corral Spring Florida April 3- April 7.
In game one, the Gladiators took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Joseph Del Rossi scored the first of 2 goals on a deflection from a shot from the point. The Gladiator as they out shot the Quakers 11-2 with aggressive offensive pressure dominated the first period. In the second period, the line of Del Rossi, Fred Lampe and Pat Capone had numerous scoring opportunities. They were rewarded with Del Rossi's second goal in the second period, a wrist shot from the slot. Sean Sulliavan scored the other goal in the period on a breakaway. Sullivan took a long ice pass from his defenseman and went in alone on the Quakers goalie. He faked a shot, and then slid the puck along the ice for the goal. The second period ended 3-0. The Quakers mounted a short comeback late in the third period. After scoring a goal with less than five minutes to go, they continued to pressure the Gladiators. But the Gladiators defense and Goalie (Bryan Williams - 18 saves) refused to allow the Quakers to score another goal. The game ended 3-1 with the Gladiators out shooting the Quakers 29-19.
The Gladiators won the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL) BANTAM AA Division with an 11-2-3 record. They advanced to the Atlantic District finals by winning three straight games at the ATLANTIC DISTRICT TIER II "AA" TOURNAMENT in West Chester, PA last weekend They beat the New Jersey Devil 3-1, the Quakers 4-3, and the Ice House Avalanche 1-0.
