High School Ice Hockey:
Annual Ice Hockey Awards Announced

For the last seven years SJSports has given out awards to the players in the SJHSIHL, and as always narrowing the field has been a difficult task, none more so than this year. For the first time we are awarding 2 trophies in each Tier. Another first is in the J.V. category both of our selections were goalies. We would like to congratulate the winners and you as well can congratulate them on Monday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees as the award ceremony will be prior to the start of the Tier 1 championship game at approximately 8:15. Listed below are the winners:

Tier 1 Players of the Year:
Dan Maugieri - Cherokee Chiefs
-- Tom Ruiz - Williamstown Braves

Tier 2 Players of the Year:
Gary Scott - Timber Creek Chargers
Evan Betz - West Deptford Eagles

Coach of the Year:
Steve Rumbos - Cherokee Chiefs
l
JVA Player of the Year:
Chris Rainey - Washington Township Minutemen
JVB Player of the Year:
Justin Popielarski - Shawnee Renegades
l
Best Defenseman:
Tyler Dornewass - Williamstown Braves
l
Leadership Award:
Justin Osterdahl - Williamstown Braves


Tier 1 Players of the Year:


Dan Maugieri - Cherokee Chiefs led his team in goals with 30 and in points with 47 and was a key contributor to an undefeated season.


Tom Ruiz - Williamstown Braves, led the league in scoring with 50 points and helped his team to a 14-6-2 record.

Coach of the Year:

Steve Rumbos - Cherokee Chiefs - Coming off a championship season last year and with every team wanting to knock you off, Steve guided his team to an undefeated season at 20-0-2.

Tier 2 Players of the Year:


Gary Scott - Timber Creek Chargers, tied for the league lead in scoring with 44 points and second in the league in goals with 29, his tenacious play on both ends of the ice contributed to his success.


Evan Betz - West Deptford Eagles, with a 15-2-2 record and 1.79 goals against average, Evan led his team to a second place finish.

JVA Player of the Year:


Chris Rainey - Washington Township Minutemen, Chris led the league in save percentage and only surrendered 7 goals all season as his team went 15-1.

JVB Player of the Year:


Justin Popielarski - Shawnee Renegades, Justin won his first four games, all by shutout and finished the season 13-1 in leading his team to first place.

Best Defenseman:


Tyler Dornewass - Williamstown Braves, playing in all 22 games his durability and toughness proved to be essential in the success of Williamstown.

Leadership Award:


Justin Osterdahl - Williamstown Braves, his 30 goals led the league this year and his play on both ends of the ice were full speed no matter what the score.

Notes: As always some will not agree with our choices, but no one can dispute the contributions made by all the players and coach. See you next year!!
