Flyers Sign Free Agent Defenseman Jim Vandermeer

Thursday, December 21, 2000

PRESS RELEASE

The Philadelphia Flyers today signed free agent defenseman Jim Vandermeer to a three-year contract, according to club Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Jim Vandermeer is a guy that slipped through the cracks of the draft process and was a free agent," said Holmgren. "He is playing as an average player right now for Red Deer. He is a tough player and his skills and his skating have improved over the last few years. He has become a very solid defenseman in that league and we look forward to having him as a part of our organization next year and working with him to develop him into a National Hockey League player."

Vandermeer, 20, is currently the captain of the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. In 33 games for Red Deer this season, he has recorded 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points and 92 penalty minutes. His plus/minus rating of +19 leads the team. Over Vandermeer's four seasons with the Rebels (1997-98 through current), he has registered 23 goals and 73 assists for 96 points and 632 penalty minutes in 209 games. A native of Caroline, Alberta, Vandermeer led the team in penalty minutes for both the 1998-99 (258) and 1999-00 (221) seasons.
