Knighthawks Fly Past Wings 16-15

The Philadelphia Wings were defeated the Rochester Knighthawks by a score of 16-15 at Blue Cross Arena in. The Wings meet the Knighthawks again in their next game on Friday, February 12 at the Wachovia Center at 7:30 p.m.

"It was a close fought game and we really fought to the end," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We'll be ready to face them again on Friday night in our own building."

Rochester scored the first two goals of the night when Mike Accursi and Ken Millin scored early for the Knighthawks. The Wings got their first run of the night with three goals straight by Jake Bergey, Marc Morley, and Tom Marechek. The Knighthawks put two more up with goals from Shawn Williams and Accursi. Philadelphia got two late goals by Dan Marohl and Morley to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Knighthawks scored the first two in the second quarter with goals by Williams and a power play goal by John Grant. Philadelphia put two more on the board when Keith Cromwell scored a power play goal and Morley scored his hat trick on a short-handed goal at 9:39. Williams tied the game for Rochester when he recorded at hat trick on a power play goal at 10:23, but Philadelphia went up by one when Andrew Guindon scored his first of the night. Andrew Burkholder put the Wings up by two at 12:11. A last minute goal by Rochester's Scott Evans pulled the Knighthawks within one (9-8) at the end of the first half. Wings goaltender Nick Schroeder had 12 saves in the first half, while Pat O'Toole recorded 24 saves for the Knighthawks.

The start of the third quarter saw a goaltender change for the Wings when Dallas Eliuk replaced Schroeder. Jeff Ratcliffe got his first of the night to start off the third quarter and give the Wings a two-goal lead. But, Mat Giles got his first goal of the night to put the Knighthawks within one again. Rochester tied the game at ten on a power play goal by Accursi at 12:30. The Knighthawks got the go ahead goal when Grant scored his second of the night at 13:54. At the end of the third quarter, Rochester held an 11-10 lead.

The Knighthawks jumped on the board quickly in the fourth quarter when Williams scored his fourth goal of the night, a power play goal, at :51. Rochester went up by three when Millin scored short handed at 12:46, but the Wings scored just :05 later when Dan Marohl got his first of the game. The Wings pulled within one goal again when Marechek scored at 3:25 and tied the game at 13 on a power play goal by Marohl. Philadelphia scored the go ahead goal when Ratcliffe netted his second of the night on a power play at 8:28. Ratcliffe put the Wings up by two on a short handed goal at 10:28 but Rochester pulled within one when Evans scored on a power play goal at 11:32. Rochester tied the game at 15 when Millin scored his hat trick at 13:19 and went up by one when Tim Soudan scored the game-winner at 13:53 and gave Rochester the 16-15 win. Wings goaltender Dallas Eliuk had 14 saves in the second half, while Rochester goaltender Pat O'Toole had 48 saves in the game.

Leading the Wings in scoring were Dan Marohl with six points (3G, 3A) and Tom Marechek with six points (2G, 4A) followed by Jeff Ratcliffe with five points (3G, 2A), Keith Cromwell with five points (1G, 4A), Marc Morley with three goals, Andrew Burkholder with three points (1G, 3A), and Jake Bergey and Andrew Burkolder with one goal each.
