Event Spotlight:
Volunteers and Runners Make 5th Annual BK Run Reach Their Goal

Saturday, July 28, 2001

High hopes were in the minds of the organizers and volunteers for this year's Bill Kile Run at Cooper River Park. Bill Kile III had assembled his troops in anticipation of reaching a 5 year goal of $10,000 for the William H. Kile Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund. As the morning sun began to raise, the runners began to slowly arrive for this fifth annual event which had over 100 participants running the 4-mile course along the river.

During this event, you can always count on Bill Kile III greeting all the volunteers and runners with a smile. With that atmosphere surrounding the run, it makes it so much easier to handle all the work that has to be done. "Every year we put on this event it's a lot of hard work. But this event is well worth it knowing that my dad always wanted to do this. He was a humble man, but this was something he really wanted", mentioned Kile.

Volunteers Jane and her husband Gene Hoopes were busy cutting up watermelon and oranges for the runners at the refreshment stand. "Every year for the past 5 years I have been helping Billy with this event," said Jane Hoopes of Athlete's Korner Sports Timing Systems of Hammonton. Tim, Dawn, and Jonathan Marx were at the finish line ready to record the time of the runners when they completed the race. Other volunteers include Nancy Kile, Kim & Dan Suiter, Kim Bandomer, Paul Sollimo (logo designer), Robbie Kenney and Cheryl & Rob Dill. Everyone was working together efficiently before the start of the run.

Some of these runners do the BK Run for the love of the sport. They're ready to compete with others to see how they would fair with them. Others participate on a more personal matter of achieving the goals they set for themselves to better their own records. Both may be true. However, when you see each runner's face as they cross the finish line you will notice an expression of success, knowing they just completed the 4-mile run.

There were three ladies that were all smiles about completing the 4-mile run. Joan DiLorenzo (Myrtle Beach, SC), Carol K. Remne (Egg Harbor, NJ) and Betty Gardner (Palos Verdes, CA), the sisters of the Bill H. Kile Jr. "We all got together from all over to run in Billy's event," mention Joan DiLorenzo. Lorraine Cephus who finished first in her category of 70 and over was another runner who was excited about completing the race. All of these athletes demonstrate that if you love what you do, anyone can accomplish their goals if you set your mind to it.
