Bill Kile's Memorial Run Celebrates Another Successful Year

It may sound like the same old story when it comes to this year’s annual running of the Bill Kile’s Memorial Run held at Cooper River Park. When standing among the participants for the One Mile Fun Run/Walk and the 4 Mile Run, it’s hard not to notice a large gathering of friends and family greeting each other and catching up on the latest news in their lives. Once it was time to start the race, the main focus would be on the run and completing it before their personal best. Mark Ciafiani would cross the finish line first in the four-mile while Angela Washington Bivans was the winner of the one-mile run.
 The Bill Kile Memorial Run was celebrating it’s seventh year and race director Bill “The Kid” Kile III was still amazed and thankful for all the help and support he receives each year. “It’s pretty much the same gang every year”, mentioned the Kid before the races. “It wouldn’t really be as successful without Jane and Gene Hoopes. They are the timing crew. They have all the equipment, they have the clocks on course, tents…I want to do the event right as some events try to save money by not having a timer. I want to continue to have a quality event.” Kile also recognized the support from the registration crew like Kim Bandomer and Paul Sollimo, but most important his family.
Carol K. Renne and Betty Gardner, the sisters of the Bill H. Kile Jr., made it known that it’s special to them to make time for this run. Both competed in the one-mile and finished eighth and ninth in the run with Renne posting a time of 16:50 and Gardner right behind her crossing the line at 17:26. Angela Washington Bivans was first with a time of 10:49; Elena Smith with a time of 11:14 and Aidan Suiter recorded the third best time of 12:18. Marc Ciafani (21:03), Michael Hendricks (22:13) and Ben Huddell (23:06) were the first three runners to cross the finish line in the four-mile run. Heather McGaruie was the first female to finish the race.
The Bill Kile Memorial Run was honored with three of the four scholarship recipients from Pennsauken High School. Kimberly Bucher, Kathleen Collopy and Jacquelyn Davies (along with David Ortiz who was not present) received this year’s William H. Kile Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship fund. Kimberly Bucher, who will be attending the College of New Jersey this fall, will be majoring in nursing. Kathleen Collopy is a member of the National Honor Society and will be attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Jacqueline Davies has decided to make nursing her major and will be attending the College of New Jersey. Each also could be seen during the awards ceremony at the end of the 4-mile run as they were all put on center stage giving out the trophies to each runner who had been awarded the honor. Joseph Bucher, last years recipient, was also in attendance and is majoring in math at Mommouth University.
