The Ocean City Barons defeated the gritty NY Greek-Americans 3-0 at St. John's Univ tonight in what was an ill-tempered match in US Open Cup 1st Round action. It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but in the end the Barons quality made the difference.

The tough physical battle resulted in a 0-0 halftime scoreline but the Barons had managed several moves during that opening 45 that threatened the Atlas goal. Stalwart play by the keeper denied Mingo with a diving kick save on what was the most likely to produce a goal. On another Mingo was flattened by a blatant intentional foul by an elbow to his face while on a diagonal run through the box and a yellow was issued on the play.

Elsewhere up front Byron Carmichael was being fouled all over the pitch whether he had the ball at his feet or not but he still managed to produce some dangerous thrusts. The Barons pressed for the opener but the final ball just wouldn't come and the half ended with a good deal of frustration on both sides.

Atlas also had managed to produce a few dangerous situations, primarily with strong runs on the right wing, but the result was the same for them. The half ended advantage Barons but the scoreline remained as it had begun, 0-0.

In the 63rd that would change as Joe Brocker found Ryan Heins on a strong run wide left and Heins spotted Carmichael just beyond the penalty spot and it was 1-0 Barons. The Barons pressure continued as they worked hard to produce another as the physical play added to the tension. In the 77th Carmichael was the target of yet another dangerous challenge as he was the recipient of a studs up high boot planted firmly to his knee and the simmer was coming to a boil.

In the 82nd Brocker responded to yet another elbow to the face with a head butt and he was shown red. Now with the Barons down a man, Atlas pressed everyone high up the pitch to take advantage. It didn't work.

In the 85th the Barons Michael Todd found himself alone on goal from a ball scrambled out of the back and he made no mistake; Barons 2, Atlas 0.

In the 86th Matt Maher put Tony Donatelli through on a similar play and he made it 3-0 Barons as he danced around the keeper to put the ball into the empty net.

With the victory the Barons move on to the US Open Cup 2nd Round and will face the USL Division 2 Long Island Rough Riders at home in Ocean City on Wednesday, June 29.
