The New Jersey Stallions struck early, then added two more scores to beat the South Jersey Barons 3-0 in the United Soccer League's 1999 season opener for both clubs. Stallions forward Blamo Kwein intercepted an errant Barons pass in the fourth minute of play, moved past two defenders and tucked the ball away behind goalkeeper Jeremy Kirchner for the early lead.

Walter Bustamante would add an insurance goal 17 minutes into the second half, burying a ten yard blast inside the near post. Julio Cesar assisted on the play, with a clever through-ball to Bustamante to the right of the goal. Cesar would net the game's final goal with 12 minutes left, this time off an assist from Kwein - a through ball which sent Cesar walking in alone on Kirchner.

Goalkeeper Emmett Idzahl would record three saves on the day for the shut-out, and was tested only once - a 30 yard Barons free kick mid-way through the first half which he stopped at the far post. Kirchner finished with three saves for the Barons. The Stallions outshot South Jersey seven to four.

The match was played as a U.S. Open Cup qualification game, and will not count in the D3 Pro League standings. Paid attendance (total tickets sold) was 997, at Edgewood High School, in Tansboro.

The Barons return to action against the North Jersey Imperials on Saturday, May 1 at Carey Stadium in Ocean City, New Jersey. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
