Game Recap

The Charge once again played to a deadlock this past Saturday night, tying the San Diego Spirit 1-1. Stacey Tullock's goal in stoppage time helped the Charge salvage a point and remain in the hunt for the postseason. Tuloock's goal came in dramatic fashion, as just moments earlier Philadelphia leading scorer Marinette Pichon was carted off the field with a lower back contusion and goalkeeper Melissa Moore made a save on an Allie Sullivan on a breakaway. The tie moved the Charge to 3-6-4 for 13 points this season. The team gained a point on seventh place San Jose, which has 17, and is only seven points behind fourth-place New York. Philadelphia has two games in hand over the CyberRays and Power.

Upcoming Games

Philadelphia begins a two-game road trip this Wednesday when it travels to Washington to take on the Freedom at RFK Stadium. The Charge, who play three of their next four on the road, lost to the Freedom earlier this season, 4-1. Washington's Abby Wambach recorded a hat-trick and Mia Hamm scored the other goal on a penalty kick, as the Freedom ended a four-game winless streak against the Charge (1-2-2). As a result, the Freedom now own a three-game unbeaten streak against the Charge, posting a 1-0-2 mark over that span. Philadelphia is 2-1-1 all-time in Washington and owns a 3-2-2 advantage in the series' history.

The Charge will then travel to Boston for a Sunday encounter against the Breakers. This will be the third and final meeting of the season between the two clubs. The Breakers hold a 1-0-1 advantage in the season series, having beaten the Charge 3-1 on April 28 in Boston and tying Philadelphia 2-2 on June 28 at Villanova Stadium. The all-time series between the Charge and Breakers is tied at 3-3-2. Philadelphia is 1-2-1 in Boston, which is head coached by former Charge assistant Pia Sundhage.

Pichon Injured

Reigning WUSA MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Marinette Pichon has a severely bruised sciatic nerve. Pichon suffered the injury in the 90th minute in a collision with San Diego goalkeeper Jamie Pagliarulo. Pichon was on the ground for a number of minutes before she was carted off on a stretcher. Pichon is leading the league with 10 goals and 22 points. She was recently named the WUSA Player of the Month for June after posting five goals and one assist in the month.

Tullock Provides Heroics

Stacey Tullock scored her second goal of the year on Saturday as the Charge posted a 1-1 tie against San Diego. Tullock's goal came in stoppage time and salvaged a point for Philadelphia, which is 3-6-4 for 13 points this season. Tullock has made a living against the Spirit, as two of her four lifetime goals have come against the club. This season, Tullock has two goals and four assists for eight points, ranking her third on the team in total points.
