High School Wrestling:
Washington Township Captures Group 4 Title

Just over four weeks ago, Eastern defeated the Washington Township wrestling team which gave them the confidence of capturing the South Jersey Group 4 title. On Thursday, Township removed that memory by convincingly defeating Eastern 41-24 at Eastern High School. Mike Lotierzo and Brian Brittingham each recorded pins for Washington Township to win the contest.

Sterling Wrestles to Second Straight Title

Repeating as champions is always a hard task to do. Knowing that everyone is trying to knock you off as previous champions makes it even harder. But don't tell that to the Sterling Knights. Pt. Pleasant Boro had a tough task travelling to Sterling in hopes of stealing the South Jersey Group 2 Title away from the Knights. After the final wrestlers had completed their match, Sterling were the ones capturing their second straight title 45-23.

Eastern Downs Lenape in Semi-finals

The first day of the NJSIAA wrestling playoffs began today with the South Jersey Group 4 pairings held at Eastern High School. All anticipation of a Lenape versus Eastern rematch came true when the Indians got past Brick Memorial in the quarterfinal action. An early start by the Vikings was enough to hold down Lenape and spoil any hopes of Eastern losing twice to the Indians. Eastern will host the Group 4 finals against Washington Township on Thursday.

Township Comes Away With Road Victory

Washington Township went to Camden Catholic High School knowing their wrestling meet would be a hard fought match. This Olympic Conference matchup would be decided in the 215-pound match between Township's Mike D'Andrea and the Irish's Alex Stephenson. D'Andrea's 5-4 decision sealed the victory for Township (8-2) who went on to defeat the Irish (10-4) in a close match, 30-29.

Vikings Turn Things Around Against Highland

When the Eastern Vikings visited Highland High School to participate in an Olympic Conference wrestling match, the stands were filled with fans anticipating a well-fought contest. The intensity was high as both teams entered the mat. The score was tied at eighteen after the 145-pound match, but Eastern's Greg Wrenn pinned Brent Tyson in the 215-pound match to seal the victory. The Vikings (7-1) won the match 36-24 and remain ahead of Highland (7-2) in the American Division.

Edgewood Holiday Tournament Won By Host Eagles

Edgweood's wrestlers continued their early season roll by winning their own tournament, triumphing in six weight classes in the championship round. The Most Valuable Wrestler Award was given to Shawnee's Jim Dicicco. Some repeat winners from last year were Edgewood's Chris Catania and Millville's Dennis Laspata.

Edgewood Looking For Nice Season And Getting Early Presents

Coaches Pete Dipol and Russ Heaton said they were looking to have a nice season. Well, the team is starting off on the correct way by giving Edgewood its first Tournament win in 12 years and their second win in 8 years over rival sister school, Overbrook. The Eagles started off the season by winning the Haddonfield Invitational on Saturday, December 18 and then followed by defeating rival sister school, Overbrook, 33-28 on December 22.
